Reading RD's interview and his mention of the electrc start. I think he's got a pretty damn good point. Not that Dungey is a staller but that liitle option could change the game for a KTM rider...

what say you?

No doubt e-start is better than no-e-start... And obviously it could save RD's ass.. I remember JS spending some time kicking his yamaha... My YZ can be a PITA to restart.. especially if your being impatient and snap kick it

the topic seems to be under the radar but as you've mentioned; a few riders have spent many a second-kicking and re-kicking ...

This will be the 3rd year with the electric start,so nothing new,its certainly helped out all the front runners in Europe (you can hardly tell if the bike stalled/stopped),but like you say its not been mentioned as far as Dungey goes really,if he goes down you'll hear all about it though

Why don’t all manufacturers have e start who the hell wants to kick a bike over anymore

The starter and batter are heavy and the thumpers are already going in the wrong direction with weight.

E start is priceless in tight, gnarly, rocky steep uphill sections. Everywhere else it is only awesome.

Exactly kjs! I can't believe all bikes don't have this yet either. I have it and love it!

mtl... I agree with you somewhat. Thumpers are heavy but the a few extra lbs isn't going to make that big of a difference. Especially with how light some of these batteries are these days. The advantages it gives you far out weight the weight problem in my eyes. Once you use it.... you'll never want to go back to kicking bikes.

I think the Factory Edition bikes is to the point now where the few extra pounds the Estart adds is overcome by the advantages it provides in quick restarts. With Dungey, I can't think of very many times when he has straight up stalled a bike without wrecking, so we will have to see if it pays off.

My big question is....does the Estart fire the bike up while the transmission is still in gear?

If it does, this would be the single biggest advantage as most four strokes these days hardly start with the bike still in gear. We have seen alot of stalls and wrecks where the rider spends 5-15 seconds rocking the bike back and forth trying to get that hot transmission to slip back into neutral. At times, this seems to be the biggest cost of time, not the actual starting of the bike with a conventional kick starter.

8-10lbs for starter and heavier stator and battery is abotu 4% of a bike weights. I have no problem kicking a bike over. If you need electric start to get it running, your bike probably has some other issues (valves, timing, jetting, etc)

If anyone wants to follow KTM, hydro clutch is the way to go. I got one for my CRF and wont ever turn back.

Well I've ridden every bike under the sun and I couldn't tell a difference in the weight. My point is... it's not that big of a difference for us wkd warriors or am racers. Shaving off a few lbs is not going to make you faster at your local track.

mxtech1.... yes the bike will still fire with the bike in gear.

I think the factory bikes use a very lightweight battery, and I imagine they replace it every moto with a fully charged one. I think MXA mentioned that when they tested Short's bike. The starter mechanism itself isn't all that much heavier than the kickstart mechanism, so you're maybe talking about 2 or 3 lbs difference. Doesn't sound like a lot, but factories spend lots of money to shave 2 or 3 lbs. But at least the KTM guys have options that the other guys don't.

Here was my delima...being a shorter rider...kickstarting my CR250R was sometimes a challange on its own, especially in deep sand or steep inclines...so switching to a 4 stroke had be very worried about being able to kick it over...i was at a dealer looking at the CRFs and in talkin to the salesmen...he told me that i could get the 250x and with a few mods, could basically be riding a 250r with electric start....so thats what i did....although i would consider it more the a "few" mods...i believe i now have a CRF250R with electric start....ohhh, and a green sticker..... Wink
