one thing about bad mofo, at least he actually rides.

To me, it sounds like the 70 lbs would be on full oh-shit braking.

The question about the other mounts is intriguing and, still, unanswered!

Guys, I wasnt stating the claim verbatum off ad copy. I was told a 70lb shift to the front wheel in a phone conversation. I have no idea if this is weight shift on deceleration, acceleration, static, or whatever else. I'm sure whatever was said was dumbed down for laymans terms, but what stuck was the 70lbs. All I know is it works. I am curious to find out the answer, though. Why do my posts always turn in to a shit show? Sheeesshhhhhhhh....Dizzy
No shit show BAD10......you had a lot of good info in that post! I'm sure other YZF owners are thanking you big time on the heads up. IF I still had mine.....I'd be ordering mine first thing on Monday morning. It was in no intention of mine to second guess your claim.....only the wordage of the ad. I'm glad that mod is working for you. Sure a lot of guys will be following your footsteps. Keep riding that SOB and have fun!

The 70 lbs could be taken out of context here folks, as in not actually adding 70 actualy pounds of weight on the front but the force equivelent to 70 pounds under acceleration.

I love how absolutely sure the knuckle heads here are about the physics related to this part when it seems that they:
1. Don't own a 450 Yamaha
2. Don't own the part
3. Have never ridden a before and after 450 Yamaha fitted with the part
4. Have never personally seen the part
5. Give no information to their education or experience as an engineer / physicist

I think machine and roost are on to something. My guess though, would be that the added 70lbs of pressure to the front wheel over the stock mounts would ocurr on de-acceration, not acceleration, as weight is always transferred to the front when you let off or brake with the front brake. Not something you are going to measure with bathroom scales, that's for sure...

Maybe a better way to describe how the mount works is that it provides 70 more pounds of pressure vs 70lbs of weight.
Actually, if you want to get technical moving the weight forward under deceleration is a form of acceleration. (speed of the weight moving forward and the speed of the suspension compressing) Tongue

70Lbs, 7lbs, 70 foot pounds of pressure, transferred weight, acceleration, de-eceleration, rotating mass, center of gravity, forward momentum - all really interesting stuff, but really? A bunch of motocrossers pretending like they fully comprehend how it all works?

I like Bad10's real world application of physics.

Exactly why I didn't state an opinion on the original subject. I do much better just poking a bit of fun at folks! Tongue

IMO, I dont believe the 70lb claim as it seems physically impossible but I DO believe the OPs conclusion that the part does indeed work and that is the most important thing here. If it actually works, is it really that important what the manufactures claims are??

So when is someone going to make one that moves the engine 4mm and give it to Stewart so he can stay on the damn bike this season?

He once had a green one that was 8mm more forward and he couldn't stay on that one either.

x2 Ya can learn from people in different field. Just some people have ta be dicks about it and some are cool. This was of particular interest to me because a friend of mine owned a 08 yzf like mine and purchased a10 and commented how he didn't feel comfortable about the steering as the 08. So I will mention the shims to him.Smile

I'll buy them and do a real test.. A before and after front/rear wheel weight test will tell the story.. I don't believe the 70lbs thing.. I also agree 7 sounds a lot more reasonable.

Zookie... Read about this bike and the invitations these "idiots" engineered into the chassis.. If you don't think relocating the engine 2mm will effect the CG, which in turns effects the handling, your not qualified to speak on this subject.

You can call me an idiot all you want.

I am not saying that this item does not help at all.

What I am saying is that 2mm in a motocross bike does not cause a bike to go from crap to awesome.

All I request is someone here does a proper blind test. The mind is a bitch and if you buy something that the mfg says it supposed to make your bike handle better, you may convince yourself of this fact.

Linking me to an Aprilia website doesn't really teach me a darn thing. Remember how aluminum frames are the best (thanks Honda!), and how a four stroke would make motocross the greatest thing since sliced bread (thanks Yamaha!)....once again, there is a reason people are marketing specialists.

I don't have a YZF, but if some folks with them and these parts would like to do a real test on them and are in the Michigan area I would love to coordinate a test with blind testing of the parts and the bikes to figure out if there actually is an appreciable difference from 2mm of movement in the engine. I bet the composite CG moves less than 1mm forward. If the bike is this sensitive to changes in CG (I am being very sarcastic) then you would surely feel a difference in handling when you add a full (VERY heavy) graphics kit to your bike, or heavier bars, or half the other heavy accessories people put on their bikes.

Have a lighter aftermarket exhaust? Lighter item at the back of the bike moves the composite CG of the sprung elements forward, so it should have the same effect as moving the engine forward. Do you run a full skidplate? That would make the composite CG go downward, should change handling right?

What if I sold you a really, really, really light exhaust saying it also helps handling by moving the CG forward. I bet my customers would say the bike handles way better with it.

I'm done here, I have experience in testing vehicles. I have firsthand experience with testing parts and telling people what they should do and they think they do that, when in fact we changed nothing, or did something negative to the vehicle.

If you wanna argue the placebo effect is at work here, I'd be careful arguing that. But honestly, in this sport, it's everywhere. Riding dirt bikes well is about confidence. If wearing pink sock and womens underwear makes you feel confident enough to push a little hard, the by all means, knock yourself out.

Aprilla uses tunable engine mounts on there high end race bike to allow for CG adjustments.

I also agree it would be fun to test this product. First by carefully making before and after weight measurements.. While i was at it, I'd like to measure the effects of changing your fork height and messing with the static sag.

If lightspeeds product transferred 7 lbs to my front tire, I'd be all over it..

Since you are so smart, you should call Lightspeed and tell them that even though you have never ridden one of these bikes, that there is no way the product could do what its supposed to, and that all the testers that have used it are full olf shit, and that they they need to remove the part from the product line. You obviously have extensive knowledge in motocross chassis set up, and know way more than anyone else. I am sure they will probably offer you a job. As a matter of fact, I am positive ALL the oem's will be calling you tomorrow to benefit from your brain and instantly offer you a job for million$. You can thank me later! Since 2 millimeters couldnt possibley have an appreciable effect, maybe you could design a system that would move the motor 12 inches or more further forward. I'll bet all us dumbasses that have tried the original product will really notice a difference then!Cool

Like I said a few posts ago, if you like the product and it makes you ride better and makes you more confident in your bike then great, it has done its job!

What I disagree with for much that is sold in the motocross world is sold based on marketing bs. Much of what is sold in the automotive world that I work in right now is based on marketing. That's how business works, so good for them.

Tomorrow after work I may just call them and ask what kind of testing they have done.

This is a part that was needed for one particular model bike, that only covers a couple years. This is not going to be a windfall item for them, as the sheer numbers are not there for it. Considering the limited market, I highly doubt they are getting rich off an $85 part.

this is proof that the reverse engine deal by yamaha is flawed. it puts the weight too far back.
It's not proof of anything, it's one guys tainted opinion. Tilting the engine forward 2mm will not put the engine angle at neutral let alone a forward angle, it's still a backward slanted engine. The design has not changed, it's just a fine adjustment.

As has been said, this needs a blind test to be confirmed.

Motocross is huge on placebo, which is why there is such a huge variety of little gadget products in this sport that "work".

This sport is all about confidence so if these spacers gives you confidence then please buy them and support lightspeed.

Careful with fork height and static sag...you are also changing chassis geometry tremendously in these cases and this is where these have the effect on the bike.

You can transfer 7lbs to your front tire if you ride a bit more forward on the bike....

I agree with you as well. I won't discount the OP's judgement on the product, but I wouldn't mind seeing some proof that they do alter the mass distribution. I can't see 2 mm making an much of an effect on the static weight distribution, but I know that small adjustments like these can make a difference when in the bike is in motion. But yeah, if it's only 7 lb's, then moving forward a touch will do the same thing I'd imagine.

Tilt? Who said anything about tilt? This is about placing the motor 2 millimeters directly forward. However, being the collars are eccentric, you can position the collars differently to raise or lower the motor if you want. Some Factory teams have played with raising or lowering the motor trying to achieve better launches out of the gate. But in this conversation, its about moving it directly forward.

Well what about the other engine mounts? Your OP pic only shows two mounts, I assumed that it was raising it 2mm at the swing arm mount and making the engine pivot forward on the forward engine mounts. If the whole thing is moving forward then all the mounts would need to be changed, wouldn't they?

Others have asked the same, and I forgot to answer. The head stay brackets have enough tolerance to acomodate the 2 Millimeter shift forward without modification. The fixed lower mount on the frame, and the removeable forward mounts, have some tolerance, but not enough to allow for the full 2 mills. Those mounts have to have the forward part of the holes elongated 1 millimeter, which is not much, and can easily be done with a rat tail file.

Threw my '11 yz450 up on my brothers go-kart chassie scale just last night. with a gas in the tank (no idea how much) the bike weighed 241lbs. The front had 117lbs on it and the rear was at 124lbs. I will order a set of collars in the morning and weigh the bike with no gas with and without the collars befor I leave.

Zookie... Read about this bike and the invitations these "idiots" engineered into the chassis.. If you don't think relocating the engine 2mm will effect the CG, which in turns effects the handling, your not qualified to speak on this subject.

I've spent a few $ on YZ-F's and even helped a young-man earn some national points on one...

We ran this kit. It works. It works REALLY WELL.

Combine it w/ some Enzo suspension and you've got a Yamaha that thinks it's a Works Bike.

Is that not sort of a "jury rig"?

I have been pondering how the mounts can all line for some time now, even to the point of exhausting an internet search for the answer. Which left me still pondering. Even the Light Speed site itself, has no install info.

Sounds like a great idea, just don't care for the sloppy motor mount holes. That may cause vibration problems, like frame fractures and the such.

I agree without the name calling. That made me laugh, though.
