They would probably still be in business if they would have stocked those head gaskets for 10 year old bikes.

There has to be a huge profit margin on those $18 gaskets.

Edit to add.....I'm just messin with ya, don't take it too seriously.

We had lunch there a month ago and I noticed the bike inventory was way down.
I tried to buy a head gasket for a 02 CR250 and they didn't even stock it.

I wondered if they were cutting down on inventory then...

It was the best dirt bike store I've ever seen, so sad.

I guess thats what happens when the tail wags the dog. BUILD BIKES THE PUBLIC WANTS INSTEAD OF CRAMMING THUMPERS DOWN OUR THROATS...( ? )

Do you really think that declining sales of 250 and 450 motocrossers is what is hurting the motorcycle industry right now and pounding the bottom line of shops? And that the problem shops have would be turned around if they only sold 250 two strokes for $6.5-7k instead?
KTM sold a record number of smokers last year and plans on doing it again this year.
BUT the dealers HAVE to sell a quota of thumpers to even get smokers to sell.
That's classic tail wagging the dog. Add in the problem of thumper noise causing riding areas to close and you have a perfect storm.
It's certainly created a market gap ready and waiting for a company to fill.
Remember when dirtbikes cost $700 ? I do.

Well said FTE.............offroad bikes amount to a tiny percentage of the overall sales. ATV and on road bikes(followed closely by SxS these day) are the bread and butter of any sales dept.

When credit became unavailable to most buyers in 2008 it was the end of the volume that would allow stores like RMC to thrive. Roughly 90% of powersports customers finance their purchase.

At the same time many lenders pulled in available floor plan lines that dealers rely on to stock inventory.

As the credit crunch is taking its toll the opportunity to sell accessories diminishes just as quickly.

The net result is dealer must stock less and therefore the consumer has diminished selection when they walk into a dealership and may decide to order online.

The fact is that what is a sport to most is a living to a few and a damn difficult way to make a living these days.

Sorry to hear about a great store like that failing but it has become all too common.

Think about your local shop.....if you enjoy the idea of running in to grab something you need on Saturday afternoon or at an event they may support, maybe give them a shot a helping you with some of your bigger purchases as well before you click and buy it.

sorry for asking, but do you work at, or with, dealerships? Because I spent an average of 3 hours per week at a KTM dealership with whom I don't only do business but I am also good friend with the full crew including the owners with who I deal directly for work.

Where did you hear that KTM dealers have "to sell a quota of thumpers to be able to sell 2-strokes"???

KTM sold a record number of 2-storkes in 2010? Did you get the last MIC book?

FYI, KTM was already selling more dirt bike over 400cc than Suzuki was in 2008 and 2009.

it sucks that i go to my local dealerships for parts and everything has to be ordered, even simple parts. I have two pw50's that my girls ride and they never have parts for them, bikes that havn't changed in 30 years. Same with my sons cr85. Feel bad for the dealer..And your right financing is the key, when i was in the industry very few people came in and paid cash for a cr let alone a goldwing. Everyone financed, now no one gets approved..And the dealers made as much or more on the financing as selling the actual bike not counting the accessories that could be added on to the loan..sucks

A friend of mine and I were talking about something very similar the other day.Pricing per opening in our field has basically stayed the same for 10 years ( to stay competetive) yet our material has more than doubled. Seems like the corps hog all the profit while the service providers do the suffering. Just read the other day the corporate profits are way up while the service providers suffer, and the corps are always the ones crying their eyes out on how bad they have it. Needs to be curbed some how.

Y A W N.

So we should all pay 10,000 for a new bike so a dealer can stay in biz? Please. Such a joke. I have yet to meet a dealer than hasn't tried to rob me, my wife, my newborn and my dead grandmother blind...but I should give them an extra $2000 of money, right? Because it's the white thing to do?

And get treated like shit while they continue to try and sell warranties and whatever else than can try to get. And lastly, remind me again what value the dealer provides? I can take a bike out of a crate and install the handlebars.

Ya know, if they weren't all suck a-holes that actually wanted to make a "reasonable" buck, perhaps I'd feel for them, but I don't and won't. they all suck with their fucking games. Bite me!

Who do you think you are buying from when you buy parts online? I'll answer that, a dealer.

I guess if places like Motorsport is a dealer, than I guess you are correct, but how did we go from bikes to parts?

But it's still cheaper to buy parts online than a dealer - discounted and no sales tax so the internet is still better and no BS.

I see you still don't understand. Whether you buy bikes or parts online, you are still buying from a dealer. Maybe you have had better experiences with online dealers because you don't meet them face to face. Could the problem be you and not the dealer?

Who are you going to buy your bike online from... Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, or KTM directly? Fat chance. Maybe you need to try some different dealerships buddy. Mine matches almost every online price, and we usually even eat the sales tax just to match the OTD price of the internet shop. This means we are giving you a BETTER deal than the online places are giving you. Mark my words that the government will close the out of state tax collection loophole someday. You better believe they want to get their hands on that money.... and when they do, where will you get your parts from?

A lot of people don't understand that the nicer you are to people, the better the chances are that they will be nice back. If you act like a standoffish prick, do you really expect people to go out of their way to accommodate you? I don't think he gets it MX317.

No shit man, I was 18 when I bought my bike from RMC and I got COMPLETELY ROBBED!! I didn't know shit about financing but I jus wanted a fuggin dirt bike. I always told myself (after my old man went over the paper work after with me and showed me how I got robbed, paying 17% interest on a damn near $10,000) toy that I wouldn't buy another bike from them.

Straight up, if a shop can give me a set price and be honest with me. Without trying to sell me on a bunch of bullshit fees and everything then I will obviously go back to them right? It's buisness I understand, but people don't wanna put up with that bullshit when buying a TOY!

So I drive 25 minutes to my local dealer to get a clutch cable, they have to order it, I pay full price, wait 7-14 days then drive 25 more minutes to pick the part up

OR

I click on an online company, like say Service Honda, save %30 right off the bat, the part arrives at my door in 5 days with no tax, no driving. (twice)

hummmmmm, what would any sane person do..?

A 'sane person'* would call up thier local dealer and get them to mail out the part directly (after checking it's the correct part required).

*'sane person' - Someone who values the experience and expertise available from a dealer when encountering problems. Also, someone who values having a dealer to carryout maintenance/repairs which are beyond the customer's ablity.

P.S. "On-line" is only an electric mail-order catalogue. Why does everyone want to live like isolated souls? Interaction with other people face to face, it's what the human race needs more of.

You wanted a bike so badly that you financed it which means you wouldn't have had a bike without the dealer.
It's the dealers fault that they gave you what you wanted but you didn't read the fine print?

Sounds like people upset about their ARM mortgages, even though that's what they agreed to.

You agreed to the terms, but it's their fault for offering you the terms? Can you please point out, for the ladies and gentlemen of the jury, who put the pen in your hand and placed the gun to your head, and forcefully, against your will, made you sign the agreement?

Sounds like they might have done you a real solid. At 18 you don't have any significant credit history to speak of, so the rate doesn't really seem that bad, especially when the collateral is a piece of equipment that depreciates rapidly and usually gets thrashed by most 18yos.

You sound like you are misplacing your buyer's remorse.

Bingo! He also could have signed up for one of those revolving credit card style of loans where the payment is *only* $39 for about a year, then it shoots to 17%. I'm not sure why some people aren't intelligent enough to do some basic math, and somehow it is somebody else's fault.

Legal lone sharks. I agree that people are responsible for what they sign for but still sucks ya have to walk through mine fields your whole life , and the mine setters get bailed out Woohoo Woohoo Angry I guess we all should start businesses that operate on the principal that if people don't look for the tricks they get screwed.

There is a bozo over at Thumpertalk that says dealers pay $4500 for 450s and are making all kinds of money. It's tough for a dealer at this time.

Bite me!
Congratulations Orangecrush....................you won !!

You get the trophy for least intelligent post of the month.

I'm sure all the folks here appreciate your reasoned and insightful analysis of the motorcycle business.

Please provide a specific description of "reasonable buck".......ROI as a percentage of total revenue would be a good place to begin. If you would care to dig deeper....a department by department analysis would be helpful as well.

Name calling demonstrates an especially effective method of making your point.

Your final comment is particularlly meaningful.

Well done.
