Do i really want to go there again?

Hi guys,

I am really torn about what to do, I quit MX 3 ½ years ago when my kid was born. I have been thinking about getting a bike again. I am a huge MX fan ! online all day sniffing for news. Went to the MXON this year and got my plane ticket for the Daytona SX in 2012 yesterday!
Here is the thing, I feel a little scared about riding again, there have been so many fatalities and bad crashes lately. Been riding since I was 7, been hurt a bunch. Scared of not being there for my kid if something happens.
But on the other side I am bored a lot, nothing is exiting anymore, like the fix I get from riding my bike.
Anyone else have this dilemma/problem?

Ps: I bought a speedboat/downhill MTD/Traxxas slash and other toys does not helpUnsure

I put mx on a hold as uni took all my time and ffort. I´ve been bored out of my mind too, but it has somehow helped to do other things - working out has helped the most. But I´ll be working in less than a month after 6,5 years of uni and let me tell you, I´m probably never going to ride again. At least not more than the rare occation where I will usck so bad it isn´t even fun to ride at all.

I think you have a valid point. BUT, if jr one day wants to ride, it will be nice to be able to share that experience with him too. Sometimes the mrs CAN provide some good advice on the matter too. What does she think about it?

I agree with dirtbikersa!

I've had the same delima after long lay offs of riding. But for me its more about money. If I can't do it all the way I don't wanna do it at all. If you got the cash though they make enough protective gear to ensure you don't screw yourself up to bad. Just don't try and jump anything stupid and know your limits. When you're tired get off the track! Remember smooth fast and safe Wink

Get another bike. But KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE. It is only a HOBBY. I'm 47. I still ride MX but ride within my abilities. We race amongst our group but realize we are not teenagers anymore. ENJOY it for what it is and don't get too competitive and ride over your head. I plan on riding as long as I'm physically capable. I just do it for the enjoyment now not the competition.

Well you're ultra fit, so crashing cuz' you're tired shouldn't be a problem. Laughing Go ride, and ride within your limits. As I call it, put it on cruise control. Even if you're riding at what you think is 75% of what you're capable of, a slow ride is better than no ride. I stopped pushing 8 years ago and stopped hitting the ground. Don't get me wrong, I still fall off, just not as spectacularly and don't get hurt. Cartwheeling down the track with the bike waiting to jump on you from the top rope with the elbow out ain't cool anymore. I don't care who goes around me, I'm just out there riding. And having the most fun I've ever had. Buy a bike and live your life!

It just depends on what's more important to you, your child having a father to spend time with or getting your fix on the bike.

She already thinks i love my bike more than her, it could be the best of both worlds. Have to try not to make two stroke noises tho (or four stroke ones if you are into fat chicks)

I'm scared when i ride too. That's why I take it easy and have been lucky with mostly good bruises. Sometimes one of my riding buddies will say, "you need to brap it a little more over that jump" and I tell him I'm just fine. I just want to have fun and ride.

ha hey dude I'm in the same boat - look at the post i started last week about any " 40-50 yr olds still ride or race". its only 2-3 pages back right now - its pretty inspiring !!!! it will make u ride if u truly love it- I'm 49 and just had a non risk taker buddy get paralyzed on a bike a month ago - i had the same thoughts - although if u read some of the stories u will definitely ride if u lov

I know what you are going through, i have 3 young kids and my wife doesnt work so she can stay home with them so getting hurt is not even an option for me. I chose to give it up (just like my dad did when i was young) and just become a super fan after riding and racing since i was 4. To replace it, i started racing mountain bikes. Im in better shape then i ever was racing motocross and it is safer, less expensive, and to be honest just about as fun.

In my opinion, its just not worth it. Besides, its way more fun watching your kids get into this stuff than riding yourself anyhow.

When I was working at **** magazine, someone handed it to one of the girls who worked there, and asked if she could put it on. She cinched it up, then realized what the deal was, and couldn't get it off fast enough.

If you have to decide if you want to ride, I think you've already answered your own question. Having us try to talk you into it probably isn't the best idea.

I have two kids, a wife, my own business to run... A lot depends on me, and MX is my thing.. its for me.
I Got hurt 2 years ago, still run +30 expert, but I dont push that hard anymore. I keep it in check so I can keep riding as I get older. If I ever thought I was going to be a fatality, I would stop riding tomorrow, sell all my stuff and put a 911 with full roll cage in the garage... (gotta do something!!)

The coolest thing about continuing to ride after kids, was when I bought a bike for my sons 5th birthday. We ride together now...
