Just a thought. But have you noticed how all the fast guys who have gone on to titles, have gone "lean" in their training? Seems their trainers have taken them from bulky physiques to lean. Alessi on the other hand looks bulked up like a bodybuilder. Can this be what is hurting his endurance and stamina to finish strong? He's gotten a few decent starts like he used to. But seems to fade before the end. Just a thought.

He's no bodybuilder, he's a twig.

He has a short and stocky build like his dad.

Yeah I think you're judging him with his foam under-protector on under the jersey.

Bodybuilder, really? He can't weight more than 160 pounds. Hardly a bodybuilder.

I get your point. He definitely has bulked up in the past few years but I'm sure his cardio is still top-notch. He's probably just beefing up a little so it don't hurt as much the next time the entire field uses him for a landing ramp.

Maybe his lack of height makes him look broader. But watching last two seasons of Inside the Moto, he definitely looks like he is bulkier than all the others who appear to be much leaner.

I agree but it seems like he was bigger (no homo) a couple years ago....

Umm, yeah...... I know a few of them and the key is MENTAL fitness. The mind quits way before the body. Perhaps that is the fitness he lacks.

you can't measure someone's fitness by watching him on TV.

ask Tony to put a HR monitor on him.

Dude bicycles like 300 miles a day. That is doing a little cardio in my book.

Well on average 160lbs rider would be considered "big" for lites, 190lb rider would be "big " for 450's.

Sure there are exceptions, like pieck, and de dyker, but most moto guys aren't big.

Just cause your "bulky" doesnt mean you have zero cardio. Its not like its a trade off. I follow bodybuilding and I know that the best bodybuilders in the world also have a very good cardio level, people think that bblders dont do cardio, but its quite the contrary. Im not saying youd benefit from having 250 pounds of sheer muscle, but you can get pretty big before it starts to negativly affect your riding, especially with how big and fast the 450's today are...

Carmichael was a lot bigger than ALessi and he was the fittest of them all. But mucular sice also has a lot to do with genetics. If you put two guys on the same program, they won´t look the same physically. Maybe Mike is genetically predisposed to have fuller muscles than some of the other riders.

I wouldn't dismiss this idea. He's still a small guy, but the reality is that any extra muscle pulls more oxygen and energy when you're pushing your endurance.

People that follow MMA and boxing know that even moderate gains such as when trying to go up a weight class can seriously affect your endurance, and Mike has definitely put on some in recent years. Bigger guys always gas out faster than smaller guys.

I also believe that typical training like bicycling gives a good cardio base, but doesn't completely replicate or prepare you for the conditions these guys face on a motocross track, when spiked heart rates and frequent bursts of power are required of your entire body.

Just like the bike set-up, the difference between winning and just being top 5 can ride on a knife-edge of getting everything in the program just so.

lackluster?? Mikes results have been pretty good. He is getting beat by faster more talented riders. Mike had a window to win the outdoors and its slammed shut now. With Barcia and Wilson moving up in a yr Mike is going to have to hole shot a moto to get 5th place.

Probably more in shape people on here than you'd think.
