Did not spend any money on racing ?

You know all the costs get passed on to the end user.

Great question.

I doubt it would be more than 10-15% of their total budget, so like 800-1200 bucks less than they cost now. I really doubt they would lower the price if they pulled out of racing though.

how about they just eliminate engineering changes and R&D work as well then??? Alot of what is learned at the track is not seen during R&D work or in computer design. Factory teams work very closely with OEM engineers.

Everyone always talks about the trickle-down effect, but in reality, it's more like a trickle-up effect. What's learned this year may be applied to next years bike. The price may increase, but it probably has more to do with economy inflation, re-tooling costs, and labor wage increases.

The racing program and associated R&D testing are more focused on making the current year bike as best that it can possibly be. Engineering R&D by the factory is more focused on prototype parts and which direction the bike needs to go for the years to come. think of how many Japanese spy shot photos we see with cool parts and features that never get to the production bike! I get the point you're trying to make....but i'm not sure it's directly relatable. There's a reason why racing is planned for in the "budget" but i'm thinking that budget comes more from company overhead (or the motorsports division) than a resultant from the cost to develop a bike.

Always remember the old saying "what wins on sunday sells on monday"

I agree. The best thing that has happened to KTM has been thier racing effort in the US. The bikes have gotten so much better in terms of setup. The best part of Dungey and RD is we will get even better bikes in the future. If you sell racing equipment. You have to race. Its true for dealers also. If you want to have any sucess selling race bikes they guys in the shop need to race themselves.

Was talking to a regional manufacturer rep and a very well-known and accomplished pro racer about this very subject a couple weekends ago and both argued that it would make a significant difference. They also argued that while tv and other improvements have helped build awareness for motocross at the pro level, incentives for the people that really fuel this industry (the consumers) should be given better incentives to buy (e.g. cash back) to offset the high prices of modern day four strokes, and help revive a dying lifestyle.

What wins on Sunday sells on Monday is just a Slogan and simply is not real.

if the glove does not fit, you must acquit

Winning does not mean sales. Alot more goes into selling than just winning. But racing is a minimum requierment to have legitimcy in this business. Would you buy a bike from a company that had no race program but the bikes were cheaper? Personally I think it would make sales difficult. But it is a interesting question. Its strange that winning did not help sell RM's but it does seem to sell GSXR's.
