Chevy Colorado's Vs. Toyota Tacoma's?

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 12:10pm
I drive a 2010 Subaru WRX STi as a daily driver, and have a 2008 Express van as my moto hauler. I go to school and work full time to pay for them as well as race on the weekends at any money races I can to make payments. I'm over it.

If I was to sell both of them and pay them off, I'd have about $20,000 left over. I have 2012 CRF's that I make payments on as well, and if I was to pay them off I'd have about $10,500 left over to spend on a truck. I am really interested in a small truck for gas mileage and just to make things as simple as possible.

I am very interested in Toyota Tacos and Chevy Colorado's. I've found the Toyota's hold their value more, but I'm assuming that they are more reliable. Has anyone had experience with either? Like I said, my budget would be around $10,000 (I'm NOT going back into debt) and I don't want to be stuck with a turd. Any advice for someone in my situation? Thanks for any help.

I have owned three Toyotas and none have ever broken down on me of left me stranded. The only reason there have been three instead of one is one was crashed, the other two sold when I was forced to move. I will be buying another Tacoma future and will not think twice about it.

We've had Colorados and Canyons as company trucks and they're very efficient and they're easy to take care of; but, there's NO denying that the Tacoma is the "bench-mark"...

Ford Ranger's a good truck and can be had really cheap, too.

It's going to be tough to find a "nice" Tacoma for $10,500. Colorados are very reliable and have gotten great reviews.

I would take a tacoma over pretty much anything out there. I have a 96 T100 that has the 3.4 liter v6 that they used in tacomas for quite a while after, and its been nothing short of great. 220000 miles and no issues

I have the answer my friend: my dad went through this same thing in 2007 (when Toytoa came out with the new Tacoma). My dad had always had big trucks (F-150's) and because of work he bought a new truck every 3-4 years because he'd have about 150K miles on them. My dad didnt like the Ranger right off the bat because it was too small inside and out. He looked at reviews and talked with a few friends in the car industry that he has worked for. He actually got ahold of a decent friend that is the manager of a Chevy dealership. The guy straight up told my dad the Chevy' Colorado's are made cheap and all the issues they typically have (I dont remember what they were) but the guy gave my dad the honest truth, which my dad appreciated. He has had a Toyota Tacoma since 2007 which has 200K miles and he said he's running it til the wheels fall off. Great gas milage, not too much smaller than a full size truck, dependable, and better quality, and hold their value well. MY brother and I are both getting the same thing as my dad when we get our next trucks. Get the Tacoma, you wont regret it.

Again

Where is the Tacoma made, and how many jobs does the production of this truck account for?

Look at the big picture, then get back to me.

So you're saying that by purchasing a Toyota it benefits America just as much as buying a Chevy?

If you are A OK with all of the shit that has gone down with GM then but a GM product. For me personally, it goes totally against my beliefs. The Tacoma is made here in the US, and employs American workers with out the subsidies of the American taxpayers.

What are you going to think when GM is broke again in another 8 to 10 years?

I don't see how GM is the bad guy here.

The company is burdened by unions and still survives. It was caught off guard when the economy took multiple shits and still sells more cars than any other manufacturer (I believe this is still the case). GM took bailout money and returned all loans EARLY.

I'm not sure what you're getting at.

It's a long drawn out story. They let the UAW take them down the tubes. Year's ago, someone got the bright idea that they didn't need to make money on their cars, when the could make money on financing (GMAC Credit) those cars that they made. Interest went down, and they were faced with having to make money on the production of their products. The government (taxpayers) came in and propped them up, told all of the bond holders to fuck off, along with the vendors that GM owed money to. They are operating on taxpayers money and the the UAW just voted themselves a raise, along with a bonus.

You're a college man, do some research.

BTW: They paid back the money with an escrow account that was set up in the deal that was financed by the taxpayers. They haven't paid back shit.

More then likely he is buying used so it doesn't matter.
Other then a few parts here and there I am sure our great country will understand.

I was just looking to buy a Tacoma or a Colorado.
I ended buying the Colorado cause I got such a good deal on it imo.
Finding a Toyota Tacoma for the price is going to be a little rough but for that price not impossible.

I picked up my 06' Colorado with 93K on it and a clean tittle for 5K.
A Tacoma like that was usually around the 10K mark or higher.
My truck is just basic white single cab and gets around 23-26 Highway.
It was a Comcast fleet truck and to my surprise when I bought it, it had a whole maintenance book with it from oil changes, to when tires were changed, brakes, and even tail light bulbs being replaced. So I am going to believe that the truck had no big issues before me and it runs great, I just hit the 1000 mile mark and still runs and sounds the same as it did 2 weeks ago when I bought it. From what I have read online they are super reliable as well and don't have any major issues.

Best of luck! They are perfect little moto trucks.

How do you let a union take you down the tubes? The UAW is a VERY strong union and have had their way with multiple manufacturers.

-"Someone got the bright idea that they didn't need to make money on their cars, when the could make money on financing"

Do you know why this is? Conditions in the U.S. (labor costs, unions, insurance, EPA regulations etc.) placed U.S. auto manufacturers in a position where the only way they could compete with foreigners would be a financing schemes. While Toyota has the same problems, Japan subsidizes in upwards of 14k for every vehicle Toyota produces.

BTW, how is the Wall Street protesting going, are you making any progress?

If I remember correctly GM doesn`t have to pay any taxes and won`t be paying for a couple more years, so yes it`s possible that buying Tacoma could benefit America more.
