If someone requests to use #377 in 2013 and Pourcel hasn't used it, yes, they can use it. But if he comes back and asks first and no one has taken it, CP remains CP377.

The problem with the numbering system is that there are two schools of thought, split right down the middle it seems. Some like new numbers every year, based on the points you earn, which is how it was until 2000-'01 or so. Others like a semi-permanent system where top riders can use "signature numbers" in the NASCAR style, like MC being #2 for years past his full-time racing days, or Windham's #14, or Dowd's #16, etc.

So somewhere along the way they split it down the middle, and it's been popular with some, unpopular with others, confusing for almost everyone.... At first. Then people seem to get used to it.

Here's a for-instance: Ryan Villopoto. Had he used the number he earned last year, he would have been well out of the top twenty since he got hurt towards the end of SX and didn't race any nationals -- so instead of #2 this year, the man who ended up winning both championships would have been maybe #40 or something. But because he won three titles before that, he got to keep a lower number, even though he was hurt for the better part of the last two seasons.

I'm split on it too, for whatever that's worth. I see it for the guy who wants to be #4 for ten years -- and earn 10 titles along the way -- and the kid who just wants a number that reflects that he was one of the 99 best riders in a given year.

The number system is fine, none of you guys take the time to learn it then you bitch about it. Learn the rules before you bash it.

the number system was fine until 1 person was aloud to skip a number.

Sure it's fine if everyone has to follow the same rules. I have nothing against CP but he didn't earn the right to keep #377 by the rules. And Eli earned #13 not 17.

this number system DOES NOT represent the true top 100 national riders for a given year.

I thought this numbing system was supposed to open guys up to running numbers they could attach to themselves for marketing reasons.......... 937, 259 , 800, 377.......... So what's going on when Roczen can't chose 194?

JB19, that is the point, but Roczen has to earn the number here first, and for 2012, he earned #70 the way the system is set up. When he gets in the top ten overall, or wins a title, he can choose #94 (which is what he wants, not 194).

AMA is out of touch with reality. Shouldn't be that big of a change if they guys who earn a two digit number want to run a three digit number. Instead of looking at the numbering system, they are busy talking about what rules they should have for the Monster race.

OK, I thought the problem was forcing him to run 70 instead of 194.

Thanks for the clarification.

The Champ should get first pick of whatever number they want then down the line from there. Each rider in the top 100 getting their pick of what's left. The numbers have become irrelevant and wouldn't it be fun to see someone have a better year than a rival and take their number.

You would SELL MORE T-SHIRTS if you did this.

Are the riders allowed to trade or buy numbers from each other? I think Milsaps did this a few years back?

Pretty sure he paid the guy who had 118 for it, I believe he was running 188 before that

I took my daughter to the Southwick National this year, her brother races locally so she's in tune with the day. I go just before

the racing starts . I told her who to watch for in the 450 class as some of the faster guys. As it turned out with the numbering

I said there was # 1 # 2 no # 3 no # 4 no #5 no # 6 no#7 no #8 no#9 then there is 10 we laughed and watched some great

racing.

IMO the guy who earns 10 titles in 10 years should be wearing the #1 plate 10 yrs in a row.

The numbering system is a joke. The ama and feld are a joke. Sx class and lites, then the same riders and the same bikes go outdoors and the class names change? Really? How does that make sense to anyone? Id say most on here are the hardcore fan, and yet they can't figure out the numbering system, how is this a positive for the sport?

Com e on brother, you know I'm moth to a flame with 338, 800, and the numbering system.. I think I've done alot better at this game recently. Check out epic take on the Glen Helen National coming back. Thought it was pretty civil.

So when ya going to the KTM track?? Guessing not tomorrow?

Its funny how some of the top GP guys have 3 digit numbers (Cairoli 222, Boog 121, Bobryshev 777, Goncalves 999, Searle 100, Townley 101) and it doesn't seem to be that big a deal.

Roczen should be proud to wear the 70, and follow the career of another youngster who earned the same number in his first shot at it.....

Will Hanny still be allowed to run #100 in 2012 & 2013?

DC posted about the #13 earlier.

As for #13, Eli Tomac earned that number but was given the choice to skip it and back up, as #13 is considered unlucky by many. He chose to back up, which is why he's #17 now. No one was allowed to jump over him and take #13. The unlucky one though is the guy who would have been #99 but now missed the top 100 because Tomac backed up one spot. Apparently, that guy was Dean Porter.

I think if a rider doesn't want the #13 he should be required to choose a number over #99. Bumping a rider who earned a two digit number because of another rider's ridiculous superstition over a number is unfair and beyond belief. Wow.

For years #13 was never issued to anyone. The first time I recall anyone using it was RJ in 1990. In the 21 years since I only remember Mike Craig (on Honda of Troy), Brian Swink (MotoXXX), Tortelli, and Voss using it. And I believe that Swink changed over to 103 mid season and Tortelli also went back to 103 after only one year. Voss was the only guy who ever stuck with it for more than one year.

Great reply, MXerDW - didn't even come close to answering the question! Laughing

So...................will Josh be #100 again? Or is Dean Porter the new #100?

Hansen will be number 100 for 2012 since he did not earn any points that count. 250 sx regional points do not factor in to a national number. The only way he will be #100 in 2013 will be if he wins the 2012 450 sx title and chooses 100 as a permanent #. Otherwise he will be stuck with whatever number his earned points get him. However if he did win the 450 sx ttile he would have to run #1 for 2013.

Well he could still be #100 in 2013 if he DNQ's 17 times this year.

It's because I had it formatted "#100 in 2012 & 13 ,I didn't add the *20 at first.
So he answered based on the 13. Smile

But Down South answered it.
