I have said it before and I will say it again... probably after the MXDN win in a couple of weeks.

Ryan Dungey is a class act.

Nerd,

Nice read. Do you get the feeling when you are talking to him that he has been coached on what to say or that he is speaking from the heart. Is he really that patriotic and sincere? I think so, but I can only read his words and not observe his body language.

Thanks

I'm a huge Reed fan...but I can't help but be a Dungey fan as well. If I were a team manager, I'd want him on my team more than any other rider in the world. He's professional, doesn't bad mouth the team/bike when things go south, and never quits (ala southwick).

I don't think he's too coached or anything like that. I think he's gun-shy because of things he's said in the past, like his whole rant against Lawrence at Colorado (I think) a couple years ago.

And I think he just has a tough time telling stories in general. People close to him even have a tough time. Like, ask him what he did at dinner last night, and he's kind of vague and just doesn't have good story-telling abilities naturally.

But I do know he's working on it. He's not as boring as he sounds, but he does sound boring because of this. So, basically, he's trying to improve so that he can get across his actual thoughts and feelings well. It's not that he doesn't have the thoughts and feelings, he's just not good at expressing them.

We hold him to standards of Chad Reed, Kevin Windham, etc., who are awesome. But one thing about them that you have to remember is that Chad is 29 and Windham is 33. They weren't that good at it when they were Dungey's age, either. It takes time, and for some guys it takes more time than with others.

I know, me too. Smile He split early at the race and has been tough to get on the phone.

Also trying to get Swanepoel for the same reasons.

At this point, I'll probably have to get them at Steel City for you guys.

I think I can tell you what it is, when he is put on the spot he gets a bit nervous but if you look at his interviews when he sits down in a relaxed atmosphere you can see he's damn good and natural. As far as how he "really is", he is fun, light hearted and goofy just like most guys his age. I can tell you from personal experience that its tough to talk and be the cool guy when a microphone is stuck you your face but with friends I'm the life of the party baby!

I think this video is a pretty good example of Dunge behind the scenes and out of the spotlight. Cool and confident...just a regular guy. I'm sure in the coming years we'll see more and more of this side of Ryan Dungey.

Yep and there are more of those around if one pays attention. Most of the riders even RV has good interviews when relaxed (no reading cue cards). With time comes maturity for most people anywayWink

The stuff he has been through this year is so unfortunate, and yet he never says anything about it in an interview unless he is asked. He's a great guy, and the ride he put in at Southwick should make any neutral fan cheer for Dungey this season. The way I see it is this... Unless Villopoto beats him by at least 27 points, then Dungey is deserving of the title. At the end of the season, you might be able to say Villopoto and his team beat Dungey and his team. However, unless Villopoto wins by 27 or more, you won't be able to say Villopoto beat Dungey.

Yep. The rider and the TEAM will deserve the championship. No doubt about it. I like both riders. RD more than RV, but whoever wins I won't be disappointed. I just hope they bring it home at the Des Nations.

Is there any doubt that team USA is going to bring it home? Unless something terrible happens, I don't see anyone hanging with 3 of the fittest, fastest guys on the planet.

Cam Zink, he's a fellow Oakley athlete. He competes in freeride comps and rides/races downhill or at least he used to.
