So im looking into buying a new bike. More than likely not a brand new bike. And selling the one i have now. I currently am riding/racing a 06 RMZ450. I really like it. And until this past weekend thought that i was in love with the 4 spd tranny. My stepdad picked up a 08 KX450, got a real good deal on it. I rode it this past weekend at a practice track and fell right in love with it. Not so much the bike as just it being a 5 spd i think. Ive got a buddy with a 09 RMZ450, that im going to ride and see whether it really was just the 5spd or the KX that i was liking so much. I had a blast on it in just the few laps that i did. Seemed like i was much smoother and quicker all around. Now keep in mind when i ask this that i take very good care of my bikes as far as general maintenance goes. (im riding the piss out of an 06 and it still runs like a champ)

Which bike as far as reliability goes is the better of the two? The KX, or the RMZ? Ive read the review on both and blah blah..but i want to hear from guys that have owned the bikes for awhile, RODE them and maintained them. We'll say from 2008 - 2010. Also just assume that the bike i buy is mint and there are no problems with it whatsoever. Trust me..i know buying used thumpers is scary, but we'll just assume that they are in perfect condition. I know a lot of it is all personal preference, riding style and whatnot. But i seem to feel comfortable on both bikes, so im just thinking purely reliability wise. I know what to expect out of both from a performance standpoint. Actually, we can throw Honda in the mix too, im just not much interested in Yamaha or KTM. Nothing against either of the 2, i have just owned both and didn't much care for either.

A used Honda may give you valve issues. My friends with 08 KX450F have had good luck with the reliability. I'd choose based on dealer support/knowledge because it's not IF but WHEN you'll need to replace items.

The valves are the bigger of more reasons that i am more leaned away from Honda, although i think they make a nice bike, it seems valves are an ongoing issue with them. I have seen a lot of KX450F's around for sale, most of the time the sellers reason for selling is "its too much bike" and yada yada. I really dont have a close dealer for anything around here. We used to have a nice Honda shop, until it burnt down. And other than that ive got 2 Kawi dealers within about an hour or so away. And 1 Suzuki dealer within the same distance. Normally i do all my maintenance myself, and order most things online anyway. Unless its bottom end job type stuff..i stay away from that department. My Suzuki has been super good to me. Im not kidding when i say i ride the piss out of it. And it keeps letting me throw my leg back over it. haha. But its definitely well taken care of, and its ridden hard..but not ridden a lot. I only ride a few times a month or so.

Valves are a non-issue in 07+ CRF's in my experience.

Honda's definately have the best fit-and-finish of all the bikes. They are the easiest to work on. We can't tell you which bike is going to be best for you. You are doing it the right way by finding local bikes to spin some laps on. Buy the bike that you had the most fun on.

All of these bikes are the same maintence wise. Hondas do not have valve issues. But let me re-iterate that, if you are a lazy maintenence guy and don't follow the service manual guide, the Honda's valves will be the first to go. But that's the same with any four stroke so the quality of the bike all comes down to the mechanic and how well the bike is serviced, don't let anyone tell you different.

Your biggest concerns as far as maintence go with these new bikes will be EFI and related electronics. Most guys can't troubleshoot and service these parts when problems happens. That's the only downfall to the late model bikes.

THANK YOU... I have an 08 Honda, Raced, with 60+ hours on it, no valve issues, Just check them about 4 hours ago and the tolerences were right there.. IDK what everyone is talking about with the valves.

The only Hondas i have rode are an 07 CRF250R, and a 06 450. Both bikes i liked, felt comfortable. I personally have no experience with the valves on them, just from what i have heard. My Suzuki has just been so good to me that its hard to part with it. And it somewhat pushes me in the direction of another Suzuki. I take good care of my bikes, always have. Preventative and routine maintenance is a lot less costly than mechanical failure. Seems like i dont see a lot of Hondas for sale locally, but i see a lot of them at the tracks. So must be people tend to hold onto them. And i hear ya on the EFI, that somewhat scares me too. I have never had a bike that was FI, and i know that i cant work on any of the electronic stuff myself. Are there a lot of problems with the fuel injection?

Dunno yet! EFI hasn't been around long enough yet to see how its going to hold up long term. The failures that i've seen have all seemed to be freak, pre-mature failures. I've seen a couple fuel pumps fail, some bad injectors, and a few problems with ignitions. I wouldn't let it scare you away though. Any part on any mx bike could break at any given time, that's just the nature of the beast.

I has a 07 crf 450, great bike, no valve problems, but i take care of my bikes. I have a efi rmz 450 and i love the zook, and i will admit to liking it more than my crf.

I forgot to update this after I bought a new bike. Picked up an 08 crf450r. One of Pauly Carpenters bikes from when he rode for Team Atomic. Couldn't be happier with it. Got a screaming deal on it, and the bike only had 37.4 hrs on it. It's put away for winter now. I just went out on a limb and bought it when I found the bike. Has 45 hrs on it now, and can't wait to get it back out in the spring.

The problem with the valves in Honda's is because they use titanium valves, titanium being a softer metal tends to bend and mushroom out but I really haven't heard much about them having that many issues in the 450's, my thought is that the 250's have more issues because they rev out much quicker.

I had an 05 CRF 450 and now have an 09 RMZ. I love the RMZ!! The CRF was a great bike, probably faster on the start, but the EFI makes the powerband even more dummy proof. It never stutters or bobbles, it always had nice clean power ready to go. It's very nice. I only have about five rides on the RMZ so I don't have any long term maintenance info, but I can tell you I love the bike: the handling, the suspension, the power. In my opinion it feels advanced from my older CRF.
When I bought my RMZ it wasn't running: the valves were completely worn out and I had to replace them and have the head recut for the new valves. But I have no idea how long it had been run out of spec for them to get that bad. My 05 CRF also ate valves but as has been discussed earlier, Honda fixed that in later models.
CRF valves are easier to work on than the RMZ because of the Unicam. Double overhead cams are a pain!
I can tell you if an 08 CRF had come along in my price range I wouldn't have hesitated to jump at it.
