I work about 2-3 hours every night communicating with Asian suppliers, and I still log over an 8-hour day during the day. I often work weekends. I also missed 2 of the 4-day 4th of July weekend due to work-related travel, and I'm not asking for a comp day. Oh....I'm salary, as well. Today I worked through lunch, and I got in 45 minutes before the rest of the team arrived.

Internet usage isn't spelled out in our company policy, either. It's a very small company, and the employer is flexible. In fact, the owner does it himself and we'll trade things we find on the internet regularly, even if it's not work-related. Oh, I'm salary, so I'm not "on the clock".

Either she is worthless and you were looking for a reason or you are worthless and good luck to you in your endeavors.
You just cut your own dick off.

Better do some fancy footwork and back that up or you're gonna get hosed if she takes this on.

Will the mediator see it as stealing? It sounds simple, stealing = firing. What this might cost you beyond your time could have been averted with a chat after the fact. How many other times - it will be brought up where allowances made outside the job description. Three sides to this story.

If she had the mind to clock the others in, she has the potential to seek legal representation. Be wary and mindful of the unemployment rate today.

I side with you, really. I'm not for stealing but also I understand that others in the office have saved my neck on a number of occasions.

Sounds like you are making excuses and pointing fingers for your ethical basis. Since we have all done it, posted while we work, I am going to gather to say we are all guilty of it. If it weren't that way, this place would be dead from 8-5 in our time zones.

Actually, what it sounds like is you're trying to prove me wrong or unethical in any way possible, even when it's two different companies with two different company policies.

Hey, I sped on the way to work this morning. Uh oh....

Thanks for toning it down, and thanks for providing your perspective.

Do you really think I swung the axe on her without trying to determine why she thought is was okay to falsify an employees time card. She was caught with her hands still smoking, but didn't want to believe she got caught.

I'm very aware of the umemployment rate, and I'd never cut anyone off at the knees that didn't have it comng. She could've got away with just being suspended, but refused to accept responsibility. I don't remember being a bad liar and thief being part of her job description.

As for your mediation senerio, my head isn't so big that I don't think it couldn't be a posibility. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if she wants to go that route. My gut feeling she won't.

Being a business owner myself, I tend to agree with Tiki. If she's been there 5 years, she,s obviously a valued employee. You have to give employees "perks" sometimes and you'll see it returned 10 fold.

And you guys have no clue what stealing is, try having your payroll person embezzle over $300k from your business over a 3 year span. Ya that was fun

Do you have a timestamped video of the woman clocking in the other workers? If not, you could be screwed if she decides to fight it. Even if you had her sign a statement upon firing her where she admits to clocking in the other workers, that will usually not hold up in court. If she just admitted to you and/or HR verbally, that definitely will not hold up in court.

I have this receptionist thats been with me 5 or so years, and like most employees she got more comfortable in her position as time went by. And like some employees she began to think she entitled to more as time goes by too.

Yesterday I'm out in my warehouse when a huge packing crate is dropped with her name on it. To me it's not that big of a deal being we have the room. Of course she excited about this new peice of furniture she's ordered, and can't wait to get to her condo. About an hour before lunch she ask's if it okay for her and a couple of the warehouse guys take it to her place during their lunch break. I'm thinking to myself they'll be cutting it close with a 30 minute break, but they're off the clock.

So over an hour later the employees aren't back but she's here. "Where they at?" I asked her. Turns out she never went but recruited another employee to go with them. "Okay, again "where they at?" She dances around the question and in the mean time they show up. I happen to notice that they don't punch in and go right back to work and . I then headed back into my office and pulled up the card slider reports. And there it is all three employees were clocked back in fourty minutes bdfore they had returned.

Uh....receptionist girl, "got a minute?"

I'll miss her......
You fired her for that? No wonder she was acting like she was entitled, you sound like a major a-hole for a boss.

If you told her no..........you're a dick

You said yes................you're still a dick

You were being considerate of her interest, but it's never enough.

Been there done that.

A little honesty would have solved everything.

I bet she has been cheating on her time card for years so she got what she had coming. Just because your manager at 7/11 is a A-hole doesn't mean everyone else is a bad boss.

I own my own business and you'd be surprised that you get out of an employee what you put into their time and efforts to make your business more productive. For example, referring to his employee as "receptionist girl" shows a lack of respect for her position and the work she does to help the company. And more often than not, there are bad bosses behind bad employees.

I can save my work group from a lot of stuff but time card falsification is right up there with bringing a gun to work and work place violence. You could come to work drunk and I would not have to fire you but punching in or out on somebody elses time card and its out of my hands its instant termination and it does not matter how great of a employee you were, hell you could hit a airplane and still keep your job, thats how big a deal time card falsification is.

I absolutely do not get how anyone can think there wasn't wrongdoing on the part of the employees.

No matter what the boss said or didn't say, unless he specifically told the people to move the furniture as part of their job duties, on the clock, and he himself personally clocked them back in or had someone do it for him, all of them are guilty of stealing from the company. The men doing the furniture moving might not have known they were being clocked back in after 30 minutes, if the business keeps the time cards next to the time clock, but usually with electronic cards the employee keeps the ID card on his person. So they'd have had to give them to the secretary so she could clock them in while they are absent.

To "reason with" the boss that somehow this behavior is excusable is akin to saying there's nothing wrong with Chrysler employees going to the liquor store and park down the street to get drunk and high during the workday.

Some really good arguments in this thread.
Without knowing exactly how the conversation between you and her went when she asked for the favor, it's hard to tell if it was miscommunication or just her taking advantage of your easy going style. I'm leaning towards her taking advantage. She sounds a little manipulative, like many women. Is she hot? How did she get warehouse guys to waste their lunch, risk being late and conspire to fuck you. Like Steve S said, they had to have given her the cards to punch them back in. Did she tell them that you said it was OK? Sounds likely to me. Did you ask them?

Lesson learned hopefully. I have a friend that owns bars. He is an absolute asshole fucking slave driver. If their till is $1 short or $100 short, he takes it out of their pay. Everything has to be done EXACTLY the way he wants it, down to the slightest detail, or they get bawled out. The women that work for him love him. The typical comment is "He sure is an asshole but he really knows how to run a business." They don't ask for favors. The men hate him.

You probably should have said no. Do it after work.

If you can't connect the dots on why I refered to her this way instead of using her name, there's no use in trying to explain it to you.

As for the rest of your input, it's your opinion and you're intitled to it.

This pretty much sums it up for me, and I have no doubt she probobly feels the same way.

For some of the other questions;

No she's not hot, and DF75 please have the young lady in your post submit her resume to me.

90smxer: No, there is no video evidence of her, but if I'm understanding you correctly, she could have admitted verbally to myself, HR and signed a statement confessing the the act, yet I'm still screwed? How would a video recording of it help?

The employees do not carry their sliders with them, they are left by the clock. Okay, I can hear your brains grinding, they way the shop is set up it's near impossible for another employee to clock them in without being noticed. She the only one that can roam around freely with out being question.

Borg: I think I said this before, did they plan this in advance or on the fly, I have no idea. Simply it doesn't matter. They clocked out a 12:00 and were clocked back in less then 25 minutes later. When they finally did return, none of them clocked back in. Aranged or on the fly, no idea.

Lastly, am I an dick, asshole, asshole boss, stooge, sucker and whatever else I've been refered to so far? I can only answer that by saying I'm a member at Vital.

To clarify the wrongdoing is lead crystal clear. I don't think anyone is forgiving her for that, at least I am not. The issue lies with employee rights and the ramifications that could come back on Whyz.

As I said the receptionist could have been a huge bitch and this was just the last straw for him. She could have been the reason between a client and the company. Only he knows that. While there is some cathartic release to posting personal items on the interwebs, this thread gave me insight to the type of leadership demonstrated with the last line. "I'll miss her." It sounds to me that ego is what is hurt here, not the stealing or financial loss.

The insurance is a needle in the side, the potential was there to be a problem, the anger makes perfect sense. Most of all I will admit from the outside it's easy for me to say different, and I would like to think I would react differently.

5 years of experience will be hard to find and being an employer I think you set them up to fail on this one. I think you could've sat down with her and fixed this problem. I understand that she lied and in a sense stole, but she probably got scared because it sounds like working for you is like working for Hitler.

Unless I'm missing something she was loyal to you as an employee for 5 years and you shit on her in a day?

With 9.1% unemployment, you would think people would do everything they could to try and hold onto their jobs, not test how far they could push the boss.
