I am thinkin of purchaseing one. I know there has been so issues. Any I need to check out be fore I buy?
in a nutshell.
1: Linkage may need to be changed, depending on your height, weight, skill level, and riding conditions
2: transmissions are a weak spot, and may possibly fail if you are a fast guys, and hard shifter
3: clutch is pretty much crap for anything other than trail riding
4: the gas in oil problem, caused by a leaking injector

Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
in stock form the bike isnt so great for most riders, but with a little work it can go from the worse bike you have ridden to the best.
if you weigh less than 200 lbs you will pribably want to get a linkage and revalving, and there are some options out there to fix the 4 bolt clutch issue also.
My complaint was that it stalled way to easy, which could be fixed with diff mapping, and the clutch was horrible. The worst clutch I have ever experienced on a motorcycle as in heavey pull and you only got full release of the plates when the level was touching the handlebar. For me a bad combo. Add the easy stall thing and not the easiest bike to start. Pretty odd that the clutch is also considered shit despite it's so damn hard to pull? The other 450s and older CRF450s have a much lighter pull.
I'm to slow to find the suspension crappy, and the stink bug critique didn't really bother me (as in changing to the PC or FC longer link to reduce the aggressive knifing) other than I newer knew where the bike would pull me out of corners which felt like the bike was in charge of the situation and bikes are stupid.
But as in quality, I think it's ok and I still consider it as the best looking bike in the pit and I really felt bad when I sold it because I wanted it to deliver....
Protect the bottom of the frame with a good skidplate.
Run 14/51 gearing on faster tracks with sweeping turns.
Getting the suspension dialed for you will greatly affect the handling.
Pop wheelies.
Best bike I have ever ridden after a few escential fixes. Must haves = lowering link, and balanced suspension. Next on the list is an oversided front rotor, pipe, and fuel mapping. And last is high compression piston and head porting.
Had a new 09, then got a leftover 10. Zero problems with either. Had suspension, lowering link, pipe, high compression piston, and front rotor on my 09 and loved it. Got my 10, and tried it out stock on the track, and remembered how bad the bike is stock. I've ridden previous crf450s (05, 06, 07) stock, kx450fs (08,09), and my yz250 stock; without changing anything. (there are nice stock bikes out there) The big selling point for me is that the bike is 10-15 lbs lighter than the competition. And you notice it! Adding power and balance to a bike is easy, subtracting that kind of weight is almost impossible. Or very expensive.
