EVER* dammit why can't you edit the headline!
broke mine sept. 2 last year. I'm out of therapy about 2 weeks now and my doc told me i'm released to get back to normal activities. i know i'm not strong enough to ride yet and have some pain when walking alot of the time still. after a day of yard work yesterday , i couldn't even take a step this morning for about 45 minutes. i'm just curious about a timeframe of when this pain should subside and how long before people started riding again. my doc says close to a year but i don't always believe them Wink

I broke my calcaneus and talus in '97. Trust your Doc, it took me nearly a year to get over it and almost two years before I didn't limp like crazy. My best advice is this; If you can't jump off the curb, stay off your bike.

Oh, almost eleven years later and it still gives me fits. I have a severe limp first thing in the morning and late at night.

thanks... although i miss racing more than anything i know i have to be smart and let myself heal up (no pun intended). i'm in no rush to get back on the bike - already assuming i'm missing this season. no point in getting a bike again in august / september when the season's over in october

I rushed myself to get back on the bike, even though I knew that I had no business doing so. Screaming, I pushed my foot into an Alpinestar held against the bed of the truck. When I flat landed a downhill triple, I rode right to the truck and cried like a girl.

back in 2001, i broke my calcaneus pretty bad. i broke a large piece of of the rear portion and my Achilles tendon was completely broken away from the bone. they put a large screw in to reattach the bone and tendon. i was back to racing and running 5 days a week in about 3 months after the injury. everything works fine now and i have no pain.

Feb 10, 2001 Shattered my left calcaneus and meta tarsals. Trying to be Travis Pastrana in the whoops. Two weeks to let the swelling go down, then five hours of surgery. I got some high tech aircraft fasteners holding my foot together. Six months till I was on my foot, I was riding in eight. Wasn't until 24 months later where I could put together a jog.

That was a turning point of stupid hurts. No more was I risking it all for plastic. Cost me $1500, insurance was in the $40,000 range.

I didn't break my heel but I did shatter my Navicalur which had to be replaced with one from a cadaver and broke three Meta tarsals. Started riding again after about one year,

The foot feels great when supported by a riding boot espically Tech 8's that have the inner bootie. I tried other boot's and had no success.

thanks everyone - i just needed some input from people who have had the same injury. none of my friends get how i'm still in pain and can't ride yet and i was starting to think i am the pussy they keep calling me! tiki - yours and mine sound alike - i had to wait a few weeks, had the 5 or 6 hour surgery and got 7 screws and a plate. doc told me he removed all the broken peices and actually had them sitting out on a table before putting them back in where they belong.

Iro,
It will take 6 months to a year for the heel to completely heal up. I believe BT fractured his getting ready for the Sx series and now he's ready for the outdoors. Take a look at this website for some more info http://www.wheelessonline.com/ortho/calcaneal_fracture_1. This is Duke Universities website that the school uses for information to the public. Email me at keithmxatc@yahoo.com if you need some additional info.

11 screws, 2 plates shattered calcaneus and broke talus in 4 pieces. Also sheared half ball behind big toe in half from foot peg. The old Elevator when the run was short and the distance was maxed out. Came up a foot short, pun intended. MTB at first for a while then got on the bike about 8 months. Limp badly. Pain has been subsiding a little more each year. Going on 10 years now. Best of luck. My bike has bogged twice in critical parts of the track over the years. Shattered my foot once and fractured my back the last time. "It aint easy havin fun."

Jay,
Look up Scott Taylor, Honda CR250 #341, the next time your at Englishtown. He busted his up good on the old table top that used to be in the middle of the track , next to the staircase (about 1990?). His only option was to his ankle fused so he decided to leave it as is. He gets along OK these days but has recurring problems.

what a coincidence... exactly where i did mine!!!!!!! funny thing is the table top there now is almost in the exact same spot as the one in the 90's. i really don't like that whole little area by the staircase. only times i've gotten hurt were scaphoid on the back of the staircase, ankle / fib at the bottom of the staircase and the calcaneus on the table next to the staircase. weird how all my injuries all happened within 100 feet of each other Unsure

here's mine mutt. luckily i never had an erector set or anything just a splint with ace bandages

I broke my calcaneus back in 93 when the throttle stuck on my 500.......... not as bad as some of you others, no surgery. I was racing again in 3 months. I wish I would have taken more time off, it still gives me problems 15 years later. I walk with a limp most of the time. Good luck with yours!

How old are you? the older you are the longer it will take to go away. Also depends on how much collateral damage was done to the talus and sub-talar joint. There isn't much blood flow in that area so it takes longer to heal.

It's a fu(*(ed up injury and could take a few years to stop hurting

I bruised mine once.

Hahaha. Actually, I 'bruised' both of them at the same time. Spent a couple years in a wheelchair.
