Swedish clogs. Many of the Euro's wore them. I had a pair.... Hallman sold them, and I'm thinking JT did later on as well....

Yeah, agreed upon the Dutch dentist, I'm thinking Roger in the middle by virtue of the Hi-Points, yellow socks and appropriately dark leathers. Those sideburns on the far right look American to me. That appears to be a Californy license plate so I'm guessing we're stateside here. While I never made it to Carlsbad, I don't imagine grass would grow quite so lush there, so this is likely a Trans-AMA event?

"...others never became..." is suggesting all three ran the GP circuit? That would narrow down any Americans in pretty quick fashion. Blackwell I think is a solid choice for rider No. 3, as g0rd057 suggests.

Well, one outta three ain't bad, or was that good? Forgot all about Arnie, there's a blast from the past. Darn Europeans, leaving no room on the bumper for a single Yankee.

Do you recall the location, and did you take the pic? I'm infatuated with that era.

Awesome. I was there with a Bell & Howell 8mm movie camera, the film from which I transferred onto VHS (don't ask me how, pretty archaic) and then to DVD. If I recall Marty Smith (sporting #522) won both support class motos, in spite of looping out in front of me where that new cut section of track rejoined the existing. Didn't get that on video, darnit. I recall that epic 2nd moto battle between Roger and Pierre; yeah they were both getting with it. I might try "still capping" some of that video.

I recall Ake Jonnson being there also; he was an early hero of mine. I still have his book The Technique of Motocross, featuring him on his Yamaico.

"Thanks for looking"? Pshaw, thanks a million for posting! Give us more if you got 'em!!!

That looks like Rolf Tibblin in the first photo, the guy in the Husqvarna shirt between the Kaws.

I woke up with a magazine (MXA's Trans-AMA Series, Special Issue, August 1975, $1.50 cover price) in the treasure trove in mind, and scanned all six pages covering Orlando. Here's the first page as a sample:

That fine print at the bottom calls Roger and Pierre's second moto duel " the hardest fought dice of the series."

I'd need to re-scan to find the maximum acceptable resolution (file size), but if y'all wanted the rest I'll get on it.

BTW, tp4, Dick Miller too thought the Kawasaki external spring forks were interesting enough to capture them on film at Honda Hills and include them in the mag.

Early Maico's had external springs hiding under the fork boots of their leading axle forks.

Nice catch, g0rd057, I'm jealous! That's a one-of-a-kind piece of MX history you have there. I'll trade you a half-mile of late 70's Suzuki track banners for it!Wink

I wonder why some of the scores are blank, DeCoster for instance. It looks like finishing 42nd is the same as a DNF; notice Ake had a 42-2 day. If his seat hadn't fallen off three-quarters of the way through the first moto while leading he likely would've had the overall; as MXA put it, he had it "in hand".

THANKS for posting those.

Did Decoster show for this race? I can't remember. Maybe his name was on the roster, but he was a no show that day? But I just noticed, the first scoring sheet shows 10 different riders finishing 42nd place (heat 1 and 2 combined). Did all these riders dnf? Are dnf's scored maximum placing points? It would be nice to see an "official" final scoring result for this particular race printed in a magazine somewhere.

Here ya go. Sorry for the image quality, these are not scans (though I attempted scanning). I forgot DeCoster DNF'd the second moto; he was really haulin' buggy up til he endoed; I knew he seized in Moto1.

Kudalski on a Maico in the support class, too cool.

Sorry tp4 but if you look close that's not Karsmakers on the Kawaski. It's Christer Hammargren. He was a factory Husky rider late 60's early 70's then rode for Yamaha.

I'm thinking tp4 was commenting on Karsmakers without referencing the fodos following. Pierre's second moto ride was the performance of the day.
