The fairest thing to do after a red flag is just to line everyone up in origional positions and do another start.

If you get a bad start its your problem, thats motocross.

How about we get a safety bike to lead them for a lap or two until incident is resolved and I nominate RC as a safety bike rider. And then we can build walls around the track and then start riding with only left turns and then upgrade the bikes to four wheels and then...

If you watch the first start, 153 did not go off the line due to an issue of some kind. The second moto he was able to be prepared and take off with the rest of the field. In my opinion that's not fair, they should be able to use the transponder to let the guys line up in the order they were or atleast the last lap recorded.

not sure? i just noticed that because the way they showed the start both times on speed. still, im sure it was still an advantage considering he was still sitting at the gate when the line took off the first start compared to getting off the gate on the restart.

They're a pain, but occasionally they're needed.
he never said it shouldnt have been red flagged.

I read some of these posts and I wonder what's going to happen to this sport. You have a rider down with a debilitating injury behind a blind jump in a fast part of the track, his bike in the track and medical crew unable to assist him without endangering their lives, and you're all bent out of shape that there was a red flag and restart?

Are you people insane?

Some times things work out, some times they don't. Life isn't fair either.

i dont think you get it? my oint was that there has to be a better way of doing it. my favorite rider (reed) got a better start the next go around but several others did not (aka alessi). no other form of racing does this and maybe it is time to consider something new.

The current way is the most fair. How can they tell the exact place you were in when they throw the flag? The guys in the front, yea you see what position they ae in. What about the back of he pack? What if a guy passes you after the flag and noone sees it? But hey who cares about the guys in the back right? Get good starts and it wont be a problem

No other motorsport starts out with 40 competitors at an even standing either. Moto GP has staggered lines so there is an obvious advantage of being on the front row. There is someone who is obviously going to get a better start than most. Nascar has a rolling staggered start so it is obvious where people are. That's the great thing about motocross. At the start of each and every race every rider on the gate has the possibility of pulling the holeshot and leading to start the race. That's why riders practice starts because being the fastest rider does not guarantee a good start. Part of which makes motocross AWESOME!!!!!

I don't think there is a good way to do a restart. You could line them all up on the start straight single file on how they went by the finish line and restart that way. But some one could jump the start thus making it not fair.

You could have them slow down and stay in the last lap position and then as they cross the finish line its game on. But what about the dude that crashed in the first turn before the restart, he gets to catch back up with the pack which isn't fair. And let that be a top rider, he could easily pick off guys instead of riding two or three laps to catch up to the slower riders.

The restart sucks but that is the only way its safe and fair.

I like both the Ryans and don't care who wins the title...I am pulling for cr22 as a whole...

but restarts are complete crap...

mx is the only motorsport who hits the reset button for restarts...

it should be simple, line them up and walk down the like letting the 1st place rider go 1st, 2nd place goes 2nd...etc...

what a joke
It would be silly to line them up in the order they were in. It's near the start of the race so many guys are dicing back and forth out there and/or are pretty much even, racing side-by-side so it would be a hard, complicated process to sort that kind of thing out. Even if you give the top ten their positions back, a rider could gain an unfair advantage on the restart by quickly gapping the next guy with a bigger margin than when they were racing the first time. Restarts are a part of this sport, and all the same riders line up on the same line so it's just as fair to one rider as it is the next. The system is fine the way it is now.

Having flagged at Amateur events at Washougal I have had the Unfortunate job of trying to warn oncoming riders of a downed rider at the bottom of horsepower hill, I had to run halfway down the step up so riders had time to slow momentum before launching.

Also if you Remember years ago Mike Brown went down in pretty close to same spot as Trey, the yellows flaggers reacted and Ryan Hughes didn't see them in time and hit a down Mike Brown.

I was pulling for Villopoto, but the RED flag was necessary, and the restart is the same way the AMA has been doing it for years. I think Alessi suffered the most from it as He was in second and didn't get a good restart.

It all part of it

Let's not stop there, how about a first turn that allows for more than half dozen riders through cleanly.

The other motorsports don't face the same type of constraint mx does.

Restarts are moto if you don't like it find another sport. And you don't need a bigger turn you need bigger balls and better technique.

Point was a fair restart is the least of the problems when the first turns are far from equal for everyone anyway. But fast tracks with little passing would benefit from a first turn that wasn't almost the single biggest factor on your finishing position.

I guess with your logic MA must have the biggest balls up to the first turn, and RC & JS beyond turn one as they were the only one's cabable of overcoming a terrible start and still winning.

Rules get changed, sometimes for very good reason. It's not like they're chiseled in stone. If there's a smarter way to provide a safe environment for an instance like Trey's, AND they can pick up where they left off, it might be worth considering. It might even be considered a safety issue, as adding laps to a race and especially another start puts the riders at greater risk of injury.

Just as we've seen plenty of times before, the guy with the best start won the race.

Fast tracks and shit starts cause that.

What part of that don't you get?

while I don't know what a dead holeshot is... technically the race does start with a holeshot as in a shot at a hole that is only one bike wide so others must funnel in to fit. And while only one guy can get the holeshot, the race technically does start with one.

I don't really care what anyone calls it... Just wanted to illustrate that your rant was a little excessive and people need to calm down.

Also... I don't mind if they restart a race if someone is in danger on the track.

That is even dumber than your other post. NO the race does not start with a "shot to the hole that is one bike wide"
I don't ever recall a track where the first turn is only wide enough for "one bike" and by the way you describe it maybe you should call it the "Funnel shot " Woohoo Woohoo Woohoo Woohoo

You're right. Safety is stupid in MX. We should remove the rules at every track that a helmet is required.

Hey, if you can post idiotic comments, I'd like to join in the fun.

No , if you have smaller balls it means smaller weight and every pound is one HP.

And you think having riders slowed for a lap or two instead of going through a restart is going to turn the sport into tiddlywinks, eh?

You are something special, that's for sure.

It can be simplified: If you don't like the rules the way they are, don't race. Problem solved.

Hate to break it to you two, but it's 1 HP for every 10 pounds, not 1 pound.

Your small balls aren't helping that much...lol...
