Guess we must be doing something right if the stakes were not in the landing area. Stakes break off when you hit them, they are not that strong. And the idea of something coming down from the sky on top of one does not happen very often - momentum means you go through the stake, not get pierced down on it. Nonetheless, we will keep looking.

What happened to Kyle Regal was a bad, strange deal and we have tried to make sure it never happens again, and so far it hasn't

But just so I am clear, you don't like the Acerbis yellow stakes that are plastic, you don't like the mesh fence that they use in Europe, you don't like the wooden stakes we used and you don't like tuff blocks or hay bales or tires....

What do you prefer? I will look into it again.

Old school , just let the fans mark the track edges , saves money on stakes etc, fans get closer to the action and , in the instance of Saturday they could have caught Chad before he hit terra firma.
And fans are softer when you land in them. What's wrong with the flimsy plastic ones? They would seem the safest to me and would be my preference. I realize they are probably more expensive but they flex, unlike wood.

CR comments on crash aftermath

I think it is safe to say he wouldn't have finished 14th if he had landed on an unprotected wooden stake from that height.

I don't think I'll create a Twitter account just to see whatever is behind that link.

Thanks anyway though...

They have to have something. DC just explained it. Most of the people here are just being wise asses. Some have good ideas. He asked for ideas. You can't ask for more than that, so be productive, and maybe your idea will help. At least he does that. Give him some respect. If you can't say something positive, don't say anything. He asked for ideas that would help, not to listen to stupid shit.

Put the wood banner stakes into the ground at a 45 degree angle. Better for tv also.

I didn't have to sign up for Twitter to see it. Here it is:

One thing I am thankful for is that for some reason they didn't have the wooden steaks on the side of the landing where I landed...

Not to slam DC, because he has done a great job at reviving the outdoor series, but there are some simple solution's. Rounded plastic cap's over the wooden stakes, or just stick the stakes in the middle of a hay bale.

This could be a really bad deal one day if it's not addressed.

The NFL end zone pylons is a great idea. Maybe they can even sponsor them since Nationals are now on Saturdays! So no more TV competition!

Chalk or paint and still don't know why broadcast team can't do sponsor logo's like they do on football fields or other events. Keep from having support stakes holding up the banners.

With all due respect, I was at spring creek today... I purposely went over to some stakes, and no...they don't break off at the ground. Not sure what the answer is, as I'm sure that a huge amount of advertising money comes in from them...

With that said, there were no stakes in the area where Reed landed.

Something compressible with the top of the rigid anchor level with the ground? Styrofoam? Pringles cans? Coupla monster or rockstar cans taped together?

C'mon. Finding a non-lethal substitute shouldn't take a mind freak.

hmmm.... invisible fence. Maybe rigged to the kill switch. Off the track / start kicking. Wow, that would make for lots of bar banging.

Correct me if I'm wrong DC and you may not remember this, but two years ago at the Steel City national I saw you by the gate and stopped to say hello/ chat a little. One of the things I remember from the conversation, is that the staff tries to angle the stakes slightly down track so that the momentum of someone hitting them forces them to simply fall when it. Also the tip of the stake would be facing the same direction the rider is going so they basically can only hit the side of it unless they are practically going backwards on the track.

This setup which I believe is already used, seems to make total sense and I feel is completely safe. Its motocross, everything can't be made of nerf. Keep on keepin' on DC great series this year.

Simple, you bury the invisible dog fence wire around the entire track where all the other annoying barriers used to go, outfit the riders with shock collars. They can have their mechanics pick them up at tech along with transponders. When any of the riders cut the track or look like they get close to going off course they get zapped. It's a safe humane way to keep things in order.Wink Your welcome, I'll be by the Racer X tent at Washougal to pick up my free schwag bag Smile

Just an idea off the top of my head...
Stakes with some type of closed end thick rubber traffic cones over them (bottoms weighted a bit for sturdiness).
Add visible sponsor logos to the cones (3 sided)...
Similar to the yellow ones....just smaller.

If they are spendy ,just set something up....on the internet.
Sponsor a safety cone for the 2012 MX National series. Get your custom printed logo on a 3 sided safety cone that will be displayed at all 12 rounds of the national MX series,$200.00. After the series is over ,send the old cones to the folks that sponsored them. Maybe even throw in a free pass to 1 national...or something to spice the deal up. Wink
Would be a good deal for people with moto related websites that want to get their URLs out there.

Gday, i have noticed in V8 supercar racing Australia, they have used polystyrene/foam advertisement boards around the circuit. Im not sure if they would be appropriate for your purpose, but they may be something worth looking into if you have not looked into before. Congrats on doing a great job, enjoy every second of it!

I like to bring a whole herd of them to the track with me. They give better head cuz they're hungry, they give you good shade from the sun and they're softer to land on than a wooden stake.
