As Stumpjumper mentioned, Josh got caught up in Ryan Villopoto's crash, and apparently he also stalled or crashed later in the moto, and spent quite a bit of time kicking and trying to refire his bike. Apparently the official on scene noted that he looked dizzy, and alerted the medical crew.

What a bummer.

Unfortunately, most people don't realize how dangerous heat is. It's the number 1 cause of weather related fatalities. I don't ride when it's over 90 anymore.

Heat stroke happens over a period of time, josh must have had an immeasurable amount of heart and determination to ride through it as long as he did. Tragically, it cost him his life but damn, that's more heart than I could ever imagine having. RIP Josh. You died a warrior.

The heat index was just over a hundred midday. It was pretty brutal Sondy.

Man, this sucks.

Such a terrible thing to hear. I remember lining the fences at Amateur Nationals and watching him ride. Just surreal to hear this. Me and a buddy actually got on the topic of tragedies in the pro scene while at track Saturday. I didn't expect to wake up two days later to read this.

...and with all the rain it only added to the humidity which makes you sweat more.

Last lap at the top of hill by the Thor VIP area. The crowd was cheering him on as he was picking up his bike the second time, now I wish we woulnt have and poured water on him instead. Unbelievable determination.

I was afraid the worst might come of this when I had read that he went into seizures after the moto. With heat stroke, that's a pretty late and dangerous symptom.

I wonder if it wasn't complicated somehow by an injury sustained in the fall at the beginning of the moto?

RIP Josh.

I was thinking the same thing regarding the initial crash he was involved in, Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI as we call it over here in the military, can be a mysterious thing to detect and the way it affects the body can’t always be determined. Heat stroke to the extent that it can take a life is usually reached over many hours of over exertions without adequate fluid, electrolyte, and food intake... but can also be reached very quickly under the conditions we all ride in with full gear in the heat and humidity and it is not always taken seriously enough by people.

I hope the AMA rethinks it’s no IV fluids in between motos. If they are administered by the Asterisk Medical crew and controlled to avoid any stupid "doping" accusations by uninformed people it is the easiest way to avoid situations like this.

My thoughts are with the family

Very sad to hear. RIP Josh.

PA's Lowell Spangler was getting treated for dehydration at the end of the day. It was rough on everyone for sure that day.
