3.6 Sound Requirements
a. The maximum sound limit is set at:
i. For pre-race inspection:
Max. 94 dB/A 4-stroke engine / Max. 96 dB/A 2-stroke engine
ii. For post-race inspection:
Max. 96 dB/A 4-stroke engine / Max. 98 dB/A 2-stroke engine
b. The test will be conducted at a fixed RPM:
i. 0 – 125cc 7,000 RPM
ii. 126 – 250cc 5,000 RPM
iii. 251 – 450cc 4,500 RPM
c. The standard penalty for violation of post-qualifying sound inspection
will be the loss of the rider’s fastest lap total during timed qualifying.
d. The standard penalty for violation of post-race sound inspection will
be the loss of one lap of the rider’s lap total in the race in question.
The rider will then be re-scored with riders having an equal number
of laps according to their lap times.

e. If, in the judgment of the Race Director, the violation was unintentional
and/or caused by an accident, and the violation did not enhance the
performance of the motorcycle, the penalty may be waived.

The Vital faithful informed me that was a stupid question regardless of whether or not 5 pounds of muffler, hardware and plastic fell off of a bike that has been touted as already being at the minimum weight limit. But none of them offered up any wording from the rulebook to point either direction. That's how it works here.....LOL

I would be willing to bet there was a few pounds of mud on the bike.

they only weigh select bikes and from what I remember the top 3 in particular.

And isn't that mud washed away before being weighed post race?

I think they impound the bikes as they come off the track and nothing is done until they are weighed and inspected.

Since RV got 9th I doubt they even considered weighing the bike but it is a valid point that shouldn't be over looked, then there is the whole deal here that is a great out

. If, in the judgment of the Race Director, the violation was unintentional

They're trying to build a NASCAR track in Branson. There's vociferous opposition because of the perceived noise that will devalue property.

As in the past with the AMA rule book, it's more like a guidlines book..

Look at Nascar and the rules regarding aerodynamics, they are very strict. Daytona last night, they had 2 huge crashes at the end that tore up a lot of race cars. You can't go handing out penalties for a spoiler to high after a car gets rear ended or something like that. They aren't breaking out the body templates for smashed up cars, if that was the case, over half would have some type of penalty last night and most super speedway events. RV losing his exhaust is no different and does not warrant any type of penalty.

Such rational talk isn't going to keep this going for 15 pages until there's iron-clad proof that Ryan Villopoto should have been disqualified. Please try to restrain yourself from that kind of level-headed argument in the future.

Even after ayearinmx quoted the rule book regarding the sound issue, now the question is the weight limit under the assumption that Villopoto is running an assumed 5 pound muffler that fell off, under the further assumption that the bike started off at the weight limit (5 pounds on a bike that's so weight concious they use titanium axles?) Even if the was a pound under the limit after the race, it was only like that for 3 laps or so, totally inadvertently, and in a manner that was hurting him, not helping him.

Well, that's what common sense would say. But this is the AMA, the ones who took 25(?) points from Reed for lead that leached out of the solder in a metal fuel can, right? A minimal amount that was proved to have no performance advantage.Didn't Stewert get popped for lead as well? And when RC got a lead penalty it was dropped when he was in the process of telling the AMA to go f' themselves and he may not show up for the rest of the series(or rumours to something similar to that).

I questioned the weight limit before sound was ever brought up here. Again, does the same judgement issue from sound apply to weight or do you just make stuff up as you go along?Tongue

I must have missed the footage of RV stopping on the side of the track, pulling a T-handle out of his jersey and then remove his side panel and exhaust so he could save a few pounds and try to make up the difference of spotting the entire field 30 seconds in the process.

Those guys intentionally run fuel with not enough lead to offer an advantage?

For whomever is interested, I can build you an FMF lookalike muffler that will weigh 20 kilos for the first 10 minutes of use and meet the sound test requirements. After 10 minutes, the weight will reduce to 2 kilos within 5 minutes at racing speed. And it's cheap! How do I do this? Water. Evaporates. Invisible if discharge rate is controlled. You will only want to use this if you are sure that the bike will not be weighed at the completion of the race or that you will have accumulated 18 kilos or so of mud stuck to the bike.

I can design so much shit for you that circumvents the rule book if indeed the rule book is more of a "guide line book" when the bike involved is a factory machine.

This issue is a farce. The AMA does not have the balls to do anything to any of the factory teams. Who do you think rammed through the 450cc 4T bikes to be allowed in the 250cc class???

Ah, by the way, what are the protest rules in AMA racing? Do you think Honda or Suzuki might have a question or two?

Oh, and thanks to eagle eye Weigant (sic?) and Fro for noticing no muffler on Villo's bike. I'll bet you a dollar it was noticed and quickly decided to not focus on it.

How is it that everyone in Europe considers the AMA series to be low-grade dog food until there's some kind of rules technicality that no real racer in the world would think twice about, and all of a sudden its resolution is right up there with VE Day? The dude crashed his ass off, rode like a madman to get up to 9th, his muffler fell off right before the finish, the AMA referee has ever right to let the results stand, and that's that. I know that in Yurrp nothing is ever finished until the guy in the bowtie says it is, but in the savage colonies we kind of think the race is won by the guy who finishes first and the rest in order unless there's some deliberate and flagrant rule-breaking (like Alessi jumping the gate earlier). That's just how the unwashed masses see it in their simple minds.

I can help explain some of the hate towards motorcycles. Some parents decide it's ok for their children to ride their off road dirt bikes around the neighborhoods in residential areas. My main hobby is motorcycle riding. I own several off road and street bikes. But I don't appreciate the parents that allow the child to ride on the residential street with the loud exhaust and knowing the disregard for the elderly neighbors that may be sleeping.

I stopped two young boys riding circles around the neighborhood and invited them into my garage to see my passion for motorcycles and educated them that them riding on the street is both disruptive and not safe. They seemed uneasy with me once I asked if they would invite their dad down to come by and see me next time he's outside getting ready to start his motorcycle. He didn't come by but the following Sunday I went to the sidewalk and waved him over when he was riding by on the kids xr80. He wasn't told about my invite or the meeting with his boys. So I explained to him what we spoke of and that we need to keep off the street and quiet when we start them in our garages. His response was people don't need to be sleeping during the day and it's not any worse then the stereos the cars have blasting when they drive by.

I took a deep breath and told him I'm a big supporter of motorcycles just not noisy ones in neighborhoods. His answer is it takes too long to drive to an area to ride so he's allowing the boys to ride around the neighborhood until someone complains and the police show up. So knowing it's unlawful he was okay with it until they are caught. I guess we had a generation gap he was right and I was wrong because he was young enough to be my son and I don't understand.

Then as I was losing patience I once again explained the noise is alienating us against them and we are ultimately going to lose the opportunity to even have places to ride. There are more of the Sierra Clubbers types that get involved in stopping people from enjoying their hobbies then hobbyist's that get involved to vote and show up to support motorcycle closure issues.

I told him I'm not the enemy I want to be able to continue to have places we can ride and with less rules and regulations of where, when and with what limits. He basically agreed to disagree and started his bike and rode off. Now he has chosen to have his boys ride the opposite direction of my house not being wise enough to realize that I'm tolerant not happy but the other neighbors may not be.

So anyway if you are reading this and are my neighbor think about the consequences of your actions towards the others knowing they are people that can put a stop to allowing motorized machines on off road area's by the stroke of a pen.

I'd say that yes, the factories buy ads in a lot of places. But it doesn't buy them carte-blanche when it comes to the rules.

You're right, but then that's where a mysterious 20 G's switching hands comes into play! ALA RC in SX a few years back..
At least that's how I remember it?!

Did a lucky fan end up with the silencer? What a souvenier! Imagine if he happens to own a KX.

Back in the old days, we would be talking about what a badass RV was for gutting out the race with a jacked up bike and no visor. Times sure have changed.

Yes, a guy got it, but he had to tie it down in the back of his truck on the way home because it kept floating away.

Actually, all the fan would have ended up with was a tweaked silencer. Good as a souvenir, but not so good as a bolt on performance part...though they may have also gotten a piece of the factory subframe. Smile
