Nikon or Cannon?

Educate me on a decent SLR. I want to take better pictures than my point-and-shoot so I don't need the pro set up.

I have a Nikon P100. Its like a SLR inside a click and shoot camera. You just can't switch lenses.

If you're going entry level and haven't accumulated lenses from one or the other, flip a coin. I'm a Canon guy, but Nikon's are exceptional rigs as well. You can't go wrong.

That is like asking, which car should I get, Ford or Chevy. For some it is a religious debate. The both work very well.
You don't give information as to what you shoot moto, indoors out, how much you want to spend. If you have a decent point and shoot you can get great pictures with one, again depending on what you shoot. If you are not getting good pics, maybe spend the money on photography classes and learn the camera. Perhaps tell us what your camera you have now does not do or you want it to better. That would help

Echo what FTE wrote and add that you should also consider what brand and model feels comfortable to you. I have owned both brands over the years and you will be well served by either.

You can't go wrong with either. I refer my friends to shoot Canon because that's what I shoot and can give them better support with issues that may arise. Go with what your friends that are serious about photography are shooting and you will have a good support system.

Sony makes some nice dSLR's too.. What is your budget?

Sam's Club has some good deals on the Rebels. You will need a 250 lens also so look for a package deal. I bought mine off EBAY.

Especially if you're intro to mid-experience, check out the Sony Alpha series. It's the camera I use at moto and supercross and actually very helpful, seeing as it has transparent mirror technology, which basically lets you focus up until the picture is shot.

I did a fair amount of research before purchasing exactly like you. Being a newbie to digital SLR's, i settled for the Nikon 3100 as a good entry level SLR. Easy to use and great pics

If you fancy shooting cinematic HD video at any stage, go for the Canon.... t2i ti is a good, cheap place to start.

I have a canon eos rebel 10.1 mp with the 10-55 lens two battery's and a card that hold 400 pics at full res for sale for 350.00 bucks. Very low use.

For the record I bought a Panasonic GH1 to shoot video... wish I'd gone for a 2ti / Canon like the rest my friends + industry.

Go with either but stay away from packages that offer brand X lenses. Stay with the OEM glass and look for a 100-300 zoom if you're shooting from behind the fence.
