i was told that going up one tooth on the front sprocket is about the same as going up 3.5 teeth on the rear, is this true? and if not what is the ratio. (I have a cr125, geared 13/53, looking to gear it 14/48 for a little more top speed, but still want it to be able to pull)

You're going to go from 13/53 gearing to 14/48? The CR125 is a gutless bike as it is, so all you're going to do is enhance that great feature.

How new are your sprockets and chain right now? I'd keep the 13 tooth on the front and go with a 50-52 tooth for the rear. I think 50 might even be too small for it to be able to "pull". How much do you weigh? And why do you want top speed?

so gearing it up on the front is not a good idea? and because casing big jumps sucks... haha I'm too big for a 125 IMO i'm 170, 5 10' but that's all i've got for now until i sell it...

I looked up the gearing (not sure what year your bike is), but I'm guessing stock is 13/52 and a lot of people went to a 13/53. The biggest change I'd make is going back to a 52, but that's as far as I'd go.

I may be reading this wrong, but I think you are thinking backwards. Putting a bigger counter shaft sprocket on is like putting a smaller rear sprocket on. If you are looking for more bottem end you would go with a bigger rear sprocket or a smaller counter shaft sprocket.

true. Going down 1 on the front is equal to going down about 3.5 on the rear.

That is a huge step and I would not recommend it!

13/53 is 4.077 ratio 14/48 is 3.429 that is quite a difference
13/52= 4.00
12/48=4.00
11/44= 4.00

How?

It's pretty simple really. Think about a bicycle and what happens when you change gears.

I think T-Fish is on it. Go back to stock gearing and see where you are at. If anything, on a 125 I wouldn't go more than 1 tooth less than stock on the rear. I have gone 2 less on a 250 2 stroke a couple of times. Depending on conditions, I loved it. It changes the power spread a good bit. Contrary to what you might think, going 2 down on a 250 two stroke makes for one hard hitting bike.
