AMA to reserve Carmichael's number until 2011
3 April 2007
During a special ceremony at the Amp'd Mobile AMA Supercross Series in Orlando on March 17, AMA Racing announced it will hold Ricky Carmichael's famed #4 in reserve for three years.
Carmichael, the AMA's most successful Supercross and Motocross rider, announced his retirement prior to the 2007 racing season and Orlando marked his final AMA Supercross race.
According to AMA Racing Vice President, Communications, Kerry Graeber, the three-year retirement of Carmichael's racing number is in honour of his extraordinary racing career.
"Ricky Carmichael has raised the bar of professional motorcycle racing to all new levels and this gesture is a small token of our appreciation," said Graeber. "In addition to all of his on-track success 'RC' has been a tremendous ambassador for motorcycle racing overall and we wish him nothing but the best as he embarks on the next phase of his racing career."
Carmichael has announced that he will turn his attention to auto racing with hopes to eventually race in NASCAR's Nextel Cup.
AMA Racing Director of Supercross/Motocross, Steve Whitelock presented the honour to Carmichael in Orlando, and explained why the number wouldn't be permanently retired: "With so few single digit numbers available it's impractical for us to permanently retire a competitor's racing number," said Whitelock. "However, given Ricky's accomplishments in the sport, we're comfortable reserving his number through 2011."
Carmichael's statistics are likely never be matched. In addition to 144 career wins in AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross, Carmichael is a 15-time AMA Champion and was named AMA Rookie of the Year in 1996.
Carmichael has been named the AMA Racing SPEED Athlete of the Year an unprecedented five times, represented the United States in the Motocross of Nations six times and is the only rider to have ever carded a perfect season in the AMA Motocross Championship. Also, Carmichael has won championships in every class he's raced and on every brand of motorcycle he has represented.
Carmichael has stated that he will race in five or six events in the 2007 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship before focusing exclusively on auto racing. The AMA Motocross season begins on May 19-20 at the Hangtown Classic in Sacramento, California.

Heck Mike Brown is out there getting his and he's been gone for awhile-
.
Pit Row
we are talking about RC- The man wore orange gear for a whole season and still uses and markets a number that he started running when he's 3- do you really not get it?
I wish RC was dumb singed up with that beer belly in an attempt to keep his number, but RC isn't stupid. RC moved on, some of us fans didn't.
Mike Brown, just let it go dude. You did great and grab this super low number for the one time you earned a championship. That was like 17 years ago dude. Freakin' let it go to some current up and coming stars... If you want to ride for fun grab your LL number or something like that.
Saturday nationals are good.
Permanent numbers and timed qualifying not so good.
If Canard didn't have such a compelling reason for using #41 it would be cool to see him with #4.
