I can only be confident that my wife and I raised 2 extra smart kids. More credit to her than me of course.
So right now my daughter is spending her vacation in Maui also. She left after we got back. Now the whole fricken island is on fire. The area she's in, the west side, is isolated that you can't go there or leave. Many areas close and/or have burned or are getting evacuated. Old Town Lahaina are is devastated. There's no phone or internet service and we haven't had contact since yesterday morning. I'm confident that she's a smart girl and doesn't do stupid shit and will be OK. Would be nice to be able to talk to her but I just have to know that we did a good job raising her to think on her feet and she's OK.

Sooo, actually just got word that she is in a safe area and no need for us to worry at this time.
Hopefully they get some sort of control of the fire that's about 3-4 miles away moving in their direction.
It seems most of the cell towers have burned and there are only certain areas that you can get a signal.
There's a small airport a few blocks away and she was able to get there to make a call. However, they are wanting people to stay in place so I don't expect to hear from her again for a while.

My in-laws landed in Maui yesterday early afternoon, said they were driving their rental car to their resort (on the Western side) and the fire was on both sides of the main road as they crossed the island.
Then when they got closer to their resort, the main road was shut down with a miles long backup. He said he could see dozens of snapped power poles laying in the road.
They were eventually turned around, sat in traffic for 4 hours, and then made it back to the airport side of Maui thinking they could find a hotel to stay at since they can't get to the one they booked.
Spent 4 more hours searching for a hotel (they are old, and don't know shit about internet research so they literally just drove from resort to resort asking the front desks if they had rooms). Wish they would have called us so we could help, but they said cell service was random at best.
Finally at one of the resorts the front desk agent put them in contact with some condo complex that had a cancellation. So they found a room at 1am over 12 hours after they landed.
This morning they said pretty much every business is closed, they drove around for 15 minutes trying to find somewhere to eat. They finally found an open McDonald's that was packed because it was the only place open.
Hoping the winds die down and the fire crews can get some control, terrible to see the fire running through Lahaina main street this morning.

Your in-laws are lucky they couldn't get to the west side. Things ae getting dicey. My daughter is near where they sent many of the Lahaina evacuees but now they're evacuating about a mile from that area. And in those kinds of winds, a mile's not that far. The problem is, there's really no where to go. Roads are closed going south and the only road that goes north around the island is shit, may areas single lane (like for both directions where you have to pull over till oncoming traffic is past then you can go again) and along the cliff with no rails so it freaks people out. Arghhh!!

Well the road opened last night and she got out out and went to Kihei to stay with her Aunty. There'll be no getting back for a long time as we have no documentation to show residency in the area and they'll need to protect the area from looters. She said it was utter devastation. Before she got out, 1 store opened and they (her and her best friend) had to wait 4 hours just to get in the store. When they finally got in, only a few bagels to be bought, everything gone. The worst is really just starting. People separated and don't know if their loved ones are ok. Breaks my heart for those in HI

I reckon this one of those times to declare a national emergency and the airport should be nose to tail with C-17 and C-5 aircraft. Airlift should NOT be a concern or problem at this point.
Thanks Early, she's good till her flight home on Sunday now. She has an Aunty lives in Kihei that's out of the danger zone. And with the winds died down to normal level Not likely that area will ever be in danger from this disaster. Also, It's better to let others that don't have a place to have a seat on those planes. So many folks lost everything and have nowhere to go. They are moving people to the other islands as fast as possible where they have more resources.

No, I here the winds are down and planes can takeoff and land like normal. Ironically, because of the wind going the opposite direction from the storm, should have been easier to takeoff and land as it would have been blowing the smoke away. But still pretty good turbulence when you have 80mph winds. Shit, with 80mph head wind, you probably feel like your not even moving, like landing a cessna 150 lol
Good to hear. I just thought if the commercials couldn't get in or handle the load...that's basically what the National Guard/Reserve airlift is for.
Not sure how many times you have flown in/out of OGG, but it can be ass cheek clenching on a normal day, let alone 60-80mph winds.
A fair bit, but normal days the wind is the other direction and funnels through the center of the island. The problem with this storm was the wind was from the opposite direction. Since its coming right from the ocean, it would not be as turbulent.
