That's the one animal I am most wary of meeting up with in the woods. I had a really close spooky encounter once with a bull, cow & calf that I'll never forget. Not sure what would have happened if they'd seen me. I was in between the cow & calf when I first saw the cow, but off to the side. Gave me the heebies for a couple days.
I’m in Moose country so it’s pretty common. Haven’t had a bad encounter yet. Just keep moving on and give them lots of space to go whatever direction they want. Not very common for a moose to be running itself down like in the above video. Spooked Moose wanting to just get away from whatever triggered it.
Just to put in perspective of how terrible their eye sight is. Hunters will often lure A bull in by swaying back and forth with canoe paddles or plywood cut outs over their head to imitate another bull. Their eye sight is complete shit.
Can’t say I’ve ever done that on a Moose hunt.

A "Moose Hunt" thread on vital...awesome. I have a friend that teaches in a small Colorado mountain town (Nederland) and they have one or two full school lockdowns a year due to a rouge moose wandering down to the playground or parking area from time to time !!
Maybe Boris and Natasha will chime in too, they to have an ongoing moose and squirrel problem of their own.
And they can run right through the thickest brush/woods without leaving a trace..
They're so damn big ,guys who use small boats to hunt them end up taking 3 or.4 trips back and forth to get all the meat back. Have you eaten moose before? I never have but would love to try it. Venison and elk is all I've had.
Pulled some stew meat out of the freezer today.
They are similar. I love moose but if I had to eat one every day elk might be better. Also depends what they are eating.

I watched a very large bull moose from a canoe in Ontario Canada run wide open through stuff we could barely walk through.

I saw a moose casually walk through a three wire cattle fence like it didn’t exist . Started pulling the fence posts right out of the ground until the wires snapped . I’m not sure he noticed anything . 😳

Ah man I love me a good moose discussion. They are literally everywhere up here. I had one come through the yard this morning looking for a midwinter snack but I've caged up my apple tree thankfully.
They come through our area about 3 times a week. I even watched a mama moose give birth to twins right behind our fence as we live next to a large greenbelt. We get sandhill cranes, spruce hens, ptarmigan, bald eagles, fox, moose, and the occasional bear walking down our fence line.
Lucky enough to do a moose hunt just about every year, and get to help friends with theirs too.
As stated above, they are damn near blind. I have walked right by one that was just off the trail, maybe 3 feet away and I could tell it had no idea where I was. As long as they hear you coming, you're pretty much good. You can hide behind a tree trunk and they'll never find you. They're also dumb as shit. Moose safety is common sense; stay away from mama and calf, especially young calves. Stay away from males during the rut. Don't harass them. Pretty simple stuff. They are almost never aggressive
Depends on how they're processed after they're killed and what environment they live in, what they eat, food availability, etc. I've had moose meat that had zero game flavor, and I've had some that was so bad you almost can't eat it. It's very lean but you can do roasts, stews, etc. with it. My favorite is to braise it. It's very common for people to grind the majority of it and add some lard because it's so lean. Moose chili is really really good!

Venison is the same way ,I can't remember the last time I grilled it ,usually it's in a pan with some butter to keep it from drying out .

we have a cabin in the Uinta mountain range near the border of UT and WY and we always see moose. one year the dogs are going nuts so i go out the front door to see 3 very large bulls about 30 yards from the front door. then here comes more. all in all there were 6 bulls, no cows, just strolling by. never seen anything like it before or since then. their heads were easily a foot above the cab of my full-size Ram pickup.
