Times are definitely changing. Don’t turn this into a right vs left debate respectively. https://taskandpurpose.com/news/marine-corps-scout-snipers-elimination/
Sounds retarded to me.
I’m encouraged by the potential of “other options” 🫤
Yeah, Dad's kicking his coffin.
The scout sniper is for the few strategic visionaries that know how to find and take opportunities to eliminate bad guys before they cause real problems.
The Shop
They will still be part of recon and marsoc battalions it sounds like, just not traditional infantry. It makes sense given the current peacetime. As a former infantry marine I can see this. I couldn’t imagine being an infantry marine during peacetime, I’m sure they sweep the parking lots twice a day and have daily bs inspections.
Wonder if they are going to repurpose them to lead a new diversity and inclusion platoons? I hope not!!!
Sooo.......where do we get them , the next time we need them? And we will.
This sounds really stupid. Maybe we can send a community watch team with a rainbow flag over to the bad guys , and ask them to please stop hurting our feelings? Or we'll post mean things about them on the internet. That'll teach them.
I imagine they will still have some dudes who can whack a mole at a mile or so the fitty, but the nuances may be lost if they don't continue with the present training.
My suspicion is that with new electronics and automation, the "higher up the food chain"
folks feel they are not needed anymore?
Clearly the Generals think that.
I'm wondering what the captain and lieutenant think.
Don't freak out. They aren't getting rid of the sniper specialist...just rolling them into a new structure. It's a budget thing. The art of snipe ain't going nowhere.
Excuse my ignorance but, why are they changing their MOS then? They won’t be attached to infantry units so, in place will be a two week marksmanship course. Save for snipers produced through stand-alone courses with Reconnaissance and MARSOC units, numbers will likely plummet, given the closing of the sniper schools.
Budget usually trumps everything in the military...no matter the branch. Even if they get rid of the "dedicated" unit I'd bet dollars to donuts they find a way to train and retain all the snipers they need.
The military (especially leadership) has had some bad press for a few years now. Some of it deserved, but rest assured, there are some smart sum bitches in the Pentagon. They know how to adapt and overcome. No step for a stepper
I hope you're right PB. From a person just looking in from the outside ( Just a normal civilian ) it always seems like I'm reading a different story every month , about how our military is being gutted or our personnel is being " re-trained into other activities. " If a ground war starts , why wouldn't we need the same specialists we have always had? Have a lot of ex-military buddies I grew up with , and it sure sounds like things have changed.
In the 50s and 60s…the geniuses in aeronautic design eliminated guns from fighter aircraft…
Because,”Missiles are The Future of Dogfighting!”
Nowadays, the F35 has a gun.
I’m jus’ sayin’…
