BMX Tires?

I bought my kids some new Kink and WTP BMX bikes which seem to come with a decent park or pavement type tires. Are there better tires suited for mostly dirt? We live on a dirt road, have a gravel driveway, and have a small dirt bmx pump section and jumps setup, not sure if there is something better for mostly dirt surfaces. Thanks. I havent been into BMX since the 90s and seemed like everything was more setup for dirt tread then, at least what I remember.

I ride mostly concrete but the Odyssey Super Circuit tires are great on pretty much everything. I love them.

They’re worth $500 set if you can find an oem pair

Me and my riding buddies all ran the same tires for street/park/dirt. Nothing terrain specific.
fly Ruben’s were good.

When I was a kid I ran maxxis and haro catapults. Awful tires

Check out Danscomp. Maxxis makes something for everyone and Kenda also has a good selection of tires. People don't run knobbies anymore, so you're not going to see a lot of aggressive tires, but there should be a good enough description to pick the right tire.

I think I've got quite a few original Comp2s. In 20s and 24s.

Trouble is, their skinwalls are cracked, and the knobs are rotted - 45 years will do that to tyres.

Worst tyres I ever tried, were Carlisle Aggressors. Saw the Americans using them, tried them, and they were utterly atrocious things - Square / Flat Tread profile, that would just 'peel' at the slightest angle from upright. Best front tyres, I ever used were the  run of the mill, plain black Cheng Shin / Shengs, but they had to be the ones with the double sipes on the side knobs. Those things stuck like s**t to a blanket.  Better than a Comp111 on the front.

I've got new Comp3s (I'm Still a Bigger front tyre devotee) on one of my Long Frames I made back in 80/81. After I came back to racing after losing my LH  Kneecap and exploding my Tibia ( as well as my ACL, PCL and losing All of my cartilage) I mainly raced Cruisers that I made. But, waiting around for those motos made it all so bloody boring, so I made extended front end frames - 3", 4", 5" longer than my std ones - to better match the wheel base of my cruisers. I also slackened the steering head angle just a tad from the then 'norm' of 74 degrees, and ran long head tubes. With the longer 20" frames also tried / used 20 x 1 3/8" wheels  at times, especially on the front. I think that old sizing is what is called 22" nowadays? I ended up still being able to get through to a  few OZ and State Title Mains on the little bikes, despite having a LH leg that really didn't work, and, a RH knee that had also been reconstructed.

Here's picture of the 3" longer front end frame - a mate of mine that I call "The Curator " has the 4" and 5", and, a lot of my BMX , MTB / DH and Motorcycle frames from the last 50 years ( to keep 'safe' from relos that will just swoop on my collection for the $$$$  when I cark it). :BBR DDT %2B75mm 20-22 inch LH side. Made 1981

The thin downtube is actually Twin Downtubes - something I've used on many of my frames since around 1976. The brake caliper Under the seat stay is because of the height I had to put brake mount to accommodate the 20 x 1 3/8" / 22" wheels . This bike is still an Absolute Weapon in racing. Seats up for scooting around the neighbourhood by an Old Man whose knees don't bend much.

I hope to get back to BMX and DH, in the next few years, if I can get a lot more repairs done to myself . I think I could slaughter the over 65s / 70s class...........WinkWoohoo. Heck , the last time I raced, I was handing 40 year olds their arses, in my late 50s / early 60s. I'm an above average Motorcyclist, at the most,  but, I sure as hell can ride bicycles bloody well.

PS - it doesn't get raced with the DX adjustable cranks, they are set to the shortest length for me to trundle around with - re non bendy knees.  I've some Flights for actual hard  / race use. Though, the original DX pedals, have been used, on and off, since 80 /81. The Bloody Horrible red spokes were put on by a bloke I lent the bike to for some 'Retro Class' racing, last year.

PPS : sorry about the long, blathering post. I just had some hardware removed from my spine, and am 'loopy' as hell. F**king Doctors that put in overly long screws that project Out of the bone they are put into, with the extra length then tearing into other parts of your body, should be Bloody Shot! .
