Tibia nail recovery

I got some similar hardware in march 2000. It is still in there. I did not have the luxury of great physical therapy at the time and it was painful for a long time. Did not ride moto again until August. In hindsight I should have pushed myself more. My thinking was that if it is so painful, it just  needs more time.

Crappy injury, but once it is healed you are good. Not like a torn up knee that will potentially haunt you forever.

I had a very similar injury, I rode moto about 4 months later, but honestly it took a few years for it to feel normal.  Now it’s great, I still have all the hardware in it, they said it would be a pretty big deal to take it out.

Get the physical therapy. I didn't but I should have. Was 20 at the time. My knee still bothers me to this day and I can't kneel where my scar is from where the nail was removed. Broken side hurts way worse if I run into something than my other leg. Still ride weekly, just a nagging injury. Mine was broken right down by the ankle.

Did that 13 years ago at age 52, walking 5 weeks after surgery, still running 3 - 5 miles, mt biking, and mx riding at age 65. 

Best advice is keep going (moving)

I had one put in my Tibia in 2000 after a compound fracture. Seemed great at first as I didn't need a cast and was walking in a few weeks. I was riding about 6 months later.

However, after about 5 years, the nail started causing significant pain and eventually I was even walking with a cane. I had all the hardware removed in 2007 which was an Ordeal...It was like breaking it all over again. Once recovered from that, everything was back to normal aside from some nerve damage done to my knee during the surgeries that makes the whole left side of my knee numb.

I've done the same injury and had compartment syndrome with a fasciotomy down both sides, same as you. My only regret was not getting the screws out. The ones in my ankle and below the knee stick out and it's painful when they rub on certain shoes/boots. Same goes for knee braces and the screws below my knee. All my screws are all bent now from getting after it too soon and it would be a ordeal to get them out now.  

Same injury but it broke closer to my ankle. I was 26 then, took me about 6 month to get back riding because after 8 weeks I had the Pin removed. (Still have the Titanium pin hanging in the Garage).

Glad it took the option to remove it after it was healed because my Brother in law had the same thing happen about a year later and He decided to leave the pin in.

He still bitches about his decision as he can feel the aches and pains now that we are in our 60's.

I’ve had this exact set up since 2003….I was 24. Basically both bones broke lower (right at the bottom of knee brace).  
 

it’s often sore on the lower screw heads above my ankle after riding…but nothing that’s any trouble.  Besides Moto I’ve done lots of running/basketball and other things the last 20 years with it.  My Dr said it wasn’t coming out.  I do remember him saying that putting some weight on it early was a good thing to promote healing.

I am 13 weeks out from a tibia compound. I have been walking since 3 weeks out. I stayed in the icu for three days for risk of infection and concern for compartment syndrome. I am hoping to ride again this spring but I have been told it takes about a year for a full recovery. The fracture as of last week is still not healed, they may have to remove the screws in my ankle in order for the bone to heal all the way. As far as the nail being removed the surgeon said it would be an ordeal and only would come out if there were major complications.
