How about this fresh new idea. When a rider and their boyfriend manager think it’s a good idea to start telling the media what questions they can, and can’t ask, just completely stop giving the rider publicity at all for a week or two and see how fast their tone changes. Don’t ask them questions at the press conf. Don’t interview them, don’t put them in the mags etc….

hi Mirts .
This thread...
(for those who didn't get it... I likey the idea)
It's not the most sophisticated industry and a lot of people in the industry don't really understand how journalism functions. They don't know the difference between PR (promotion) and journalism (news coverage and sometimes opinion). I ran into it a lot in my days as a moto journalist.
My approach in that situation would be to just ignore what they say and do my job. But I wouldn't black out rider coverage-- that's basically being biased.

I'd argue that they understand exactly how things function. This is not pure journalism but "access journalism." No different from the automotive world.
I actually agree with this lol.
The "Media" in moto has been demonized for so many years with big riders bitching about talking to the media, answering questions, things being written about them, etc.
Fuck it, dont talk about them. Dont post pics of them. TBH, I dont really give a fuck to hear another HL interview for the rest of the season. Spend more time interviewing the dudes who are grateful to be interviewed and actually give some insight like Anstie.
It does sometimes seem that the industry, riders, media and sponsors forget that us fans literally pay their wages.
I'm curious. Can you give examples of questions the media's been told to ask, or not ask?
Because when I listen to post race press conferences some of the questions they ask are total cringe. Why waste time asking questions to a rider that everyone already knows how they are going to respond? Seems to me, if anything, the press needs a little help asking real 'moto' questions. Granted, I'm saying this from the angle of someone who's had many amateur gate drops.
That, or I'm completely missing the point of this thread.
No you don’t lol. It’s a marketing budget for the factory teams. You can choose whether to buy their products, but it’s not like taxes where you don’t have the choice.
Apparently media weren’t supposed to ask about thrasher/hunter situation in post race press conferences this week, there’s another forum thread on it
I would like to know who specifically asked that. Just curious and if "they" could explain whey.
And what generates this ‘marketing budget’, huh??
Dont you think that if people stopped buying ‘x’ brand, then all of a sudden ‘x’ brand has no money to spend on a ‘marketing budget’.
This isn’t a complicated concept.
What makes you think the rider had anything to do with it.
Especially when said rider had answered every previous question on the subject without hesitation.
Otherwise I agree.
Revenue generates the marketing budget and you are right, it is not complicated. I think a better way to say it is they wouldn't have a job if it wasn't for the fans, but you do not "pay their salary". That's just a garbage attitude.
I’m picturing a post race podium interview where 2nd and 3rd get all the attention.. and I like it!
Or talking to some of the privateers breaking into the top ten.
The long and the short of it- if a company/personality doesn’t give buyers what they want, buyers stop buying, money stops coming in and people lose their jobs.
It’s fact.
Pit Row
X Brand? I thought we decided that they are Alpinestar goggles.. lol Are we not allowed to talk about that too?
it's the other way around. Eks Brand makes Astar googles
Motocross media is like mainstream media. If a media outlet pisses off the powerful then they risk losing access to those people. If Vital got a reputation for speaking truth to power then riders won't talk to them. Media is a balancing act between giving the "news" and keeping their sources happy. An interview with the Lawrence brothers is gold for media outlets. If you piss the Lawrence brothers off and they choose RacerX over Vital because ML talked shit, then Vital just lost a lump of cash. I know this will ruffle some feathers, and I say this as a fan of the guy, but if you want to see a master at the balancing act between selling industry interests and presenting the news, look no further than Weege. The guy has nailed it.
But its Astars that has put them on the world stage. So maybe Astars is making eks brand
