Titanium bolts

Has anyone used cheap Chinese titanium bolts? Wanted to know what the quality was like and if they’re worth purchasing at all?

I've actually been buying a bunch of the smaller sizes. M6 and M8. Quality seems OK for those low-load areas. I sure as hell wouldn't trust an axle something from them but the little ones here and there, seems OK to me. Delivery takes a while and Ti sure is pretty. There are multiple sources and some seem to allow you to consolidate orders so do some looking around.

Pay careful attention to pitch and size. While everything I have received has been exactly what I ordered; I mis-measured several times resulting in major "D'ooooohhhh!!!!" each time. Laughing Laughing

If you can find someone parting out an R1, there are lots of ti bolts on them. Perfect ti bolts for shrouds, fenders, side panels, etc. it is amazing how light they are. You can barely tell you are holding one in your hand.

Whoa! Really? Good to know!
Does that mean these various used R1 hardware lots I see on eBay have Ti in them?

Thanks for the reply!

Good to know. I’ll give a few a go.
I wouldn’t trust them on hard wearing parts either, basically just for looks.

Is it 1mm thread pitch I need as I see most are that size?

I used to get a set off ebay once a year for my bikes from a guy in austrailia. DUnno where he went to but it was really reasonable and the stuff has been great!

Around 90% of my bike is bolts from ebay/china. Zero complaints for the year so far & will order again for the next bike.

What bike are they going for? I have a document for every bolt size & where they go for a 2017 ktm 350sxf

No, not really. Yamaha doesn't use Ti bolts on production machines. They're just your run of the mill button head bolts.

Agreed. The 2018 350SX in my garage wouldn't turn down some ti either.

I stand corrected. The Yamaha mechanic that gave them to me told me they were ti. If they are not, they are still super light and perfect for attaching bodywork.

Yeah, they are super light because they are aluminum. Those bolts are actually only supposed to be used one time as they stretch. Perfect to reuse on mx bodywork but you cannot torque them to spec twice.

I might torque my sprocket bolts, but not the bolts holding my side panels on.

What kind of compounds are you using to hold the Ti bolts in place? My triple clamp pinch bolts seem to be loosening after almost every ride which is quite frankly, kind of scary.

I've been buying Chinese ti bolts for a couple of years, I confirm with the suppliers before purchase that the threads are 'rolled' not 'cut', haven't had a problem yet.

I have the same experience. Just make sure the bolts you order are Gr. 5 alloy, not "pure titanium".

I am using some of the 6mmx1 bolts from RMATV (warp 9)? with no problems. I'm not ready to trust the sprocket bolts just yet. With a high grade of TI. cutting vs. rolling threads should make no difference with the low torque values used on a dirt bike. As for torqueing aluminum bolts more than once I have been using the same aluminum 7075 t6 triple clamp bolts for at least eight years. They go from bike to bike no breakage. With both aluminum and TI. you must use anti seize on the threads.

do you use the stock torque value on the titanium triple clamp bolts?

If you're using titanium bolts (or aluminum) in aluminum threads, you should also use anti-seize. The anti-seize will act as a lubricant, so for the same torque as a dry bolt, you'll get more clamping tension. Or in other words, you need to reduce the torque on a ti bolt with anti-seize vs. a dry steel bolt. For Loctite C5-A anti-seize, it works out to about a 40% reduction in torque vs. the stock values (that are based on a dry steel bolt).
