Quick question for you guys... my sister in law is dating a guy who races. She's told me that wants new metric wrenches for his bike but that's all the info I can pull. I want to make sure I get him something useful but I'm not a biker. Any out there help me with suggestions? thanks all!

Go to your friendly local Ace hardware store (or online???) and buy a 12 piece Gearwrench set or better yet, this 16 piece set. I use these daily and have failed to break one yet. Excellent quality and the fine tooth ratcheting mechanism on the box end works great. Had an odd situation once with limited access on an odd bolt on a European car that was seized. Only thing that would fit without major disassembly of other components was a 10mm gear wrench and had to put a cheater pipe on it. Bent the shit out of the wrench itself but the ratcheting mechanism never failed. Continued to use it for years after until it came up missing one day.

Everybody needs a set of these. Funny thing is the Snap on guy laughed at me when I showed him the first ever Gearwrench I bought to try out, the 10mm mentioned above. I wanted to see if he offered them or something comparable, which he didn't. He just shrugged it off as a Taiwan piece of shit. Less than a year later, guess what he was pushing???

I'd have to agree with Newman. If he is a rider There's no way he doesn't already have standard metric wrenches. A GF of mine bought me wrenches for Xmas one time, but really if she knew me at all she would have known that I already had about 2 full sets of wrenches. I remember thinking if they were gear-wrenches I would have loved them.

I love my ratcheting end wrenches. I know Gearwrench has a set at sears for decent money.

Go to Sears or Kmart...... Craftsman wrenches are affordable and great quality. 8-27mm plus Craftsman screwdrivers are some of the best on the market

Can't thank you guys enough for your help.

So let me throw this out there, assuming my sister-in-law is like Motodrew's GF and just said wrenches because she doesn't know any better. Would there be anything else that you guys would suggest instead? Something you use all the time but need more or maybe something unusual that most people don't have that works great?

Thanks again!

osuguy978- One thing I can think of that I always wanted but never bought was a tire changing stand. Almost everyone hates changing tires and one of those makes it a lot easier. If he doesn't have one I'm sure he will like it a lot.

I would look at buying him some T handles, Unless he already has them. T Handles are great for MX Riders. Or if he actually wants wrenches, pick him up some craftsman tool kit, pretty affordable and a good quality. Sears or K Mart Sells Craftsman Tools, Plus your local hardware shop im sure. Sears had some awesome sales during black friday. Just a Little late, If you got the money. Buy Mac Tools, He will love you.

I use my 6-point sockets much more often than I use my wrenches. I like 6-points because they don't leave tool marks on the hardware. If it was me I would get him the following:

6-point socket set w/ rachet - http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00934554000P?mv=rr

3/8" extension set - http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00943282000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=1…;

8mm socket - http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00934604000P?prdNo=3&blockNo=3…;

3/8 to 1/4 reducer - http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00904257000P?prdNo=11&blockNo=…

I would agree ,he probably has some metric wrenches and sockets already if he has a dirt bike.

I would look for a set of T handle wrenches.

Here is the one I have and use everytime I work on the bike.

I hate T wrenches. I have a full set of new ones that came in a large box of tools that I bought from a friend. 1/2 price to anyone that wants them.

Since you asked, take a look at sprocketstuff.com
a totally cool little tool for anybody who has a Honda, Yamaha, or KTM.
Anybody who does any maintenance on their bike has at one time or another
completely struggled with getting their counter sprocket off. But you need
to know their sprocket size as they are size specific. If he rides primairly
tracks it's probably a 13tooth

Id find out what bike he has and get him a steering stem wrench and a socket that fits the rear axle nut. Most peeps I see dont have those and have to borrow mine.

Newmann has a good idea with gear wrenches. They take a beating and fit in tough places. T handles make things quick if he doesnt have any
