This is directed to those of you who have actually powder coated your frames. Do you notice the extra weight? I am contemplating doing my frame for my CR500AF project and was wondering if you thought it was worth the trouble. The shop I talked to here locally said it would add about 2 lbs. All of the pics I have seen on here look great but I would like to hear from some of you who live with one. Would you do it again? Is it practical for a "rider" and not just for a "garage queen"? I realize how expensive it is to lose that much weight elsewhere. Your thoughts?

If your worried about weight, you can anodiz or just ask to keep the powder thin.

All KTM and Husky bikes are powder coated and the KTM is still the lightest bike out there.

I'm not sure if the weight of powder on a CR500 should be much of a worry. IMHO.

For riding there is always the concern that the frame can crack underneath and the powder coating does not crack, hiding the frame crack.... Leading to a disaster....

A frame would only use around 2-3 ounces of powder to coat. I never understood the whole weight thing with powdercoat. It isnt heavy

Dtat is right on the money. I just had my 1980 YZ250g frame blasted and powdercoated. I weighed the bare frame before taking it and weighed it directly after the blasting and powder and it weighed 3.5oz more.

You won't notice the weight difference. Use a quality shop to apply it.

And the thought of cracks being hidden was brought up, but most steel frames are powder coated from the factory.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm definitely leaning in that direction now. Gotta get on the ball, spring is almost here!

I've got a couple more questions...are you guys doing a clear powder coat over the color coat? Are you masking bolt holes, or just chasing them when you get it back?

And, what is the yellow color code everyone is using on those cool yellow RM frames?

Best to mask mating surfaces and plug holes/threads. A good vendor will do that for you no problem, just point them out to them. I did an RM with just yellow (sorry I forget the actual code/color) and I did my KTM a 2-stage flo orange, no additional clear coat on either.

Just had my 2014.5 FE 450 powder coated. I went back with the factory RAL2009 color code and two clear coats. The clear coat makes a big difference. Much brighter.
