Contact/Brake Cleaner, Carb Cleaner

I use this:


I spray it on everything (and love the smell). Are there any parts I should keep it away from?

Besides chain cleaner, what other chemical cleaners are useful?

Kind of a given I think but never spray it on rubber parts, like o-ring for the fuel fixture screw, accelerator pump diaphragm, things like this. Of course SC-1 is very useful, makes the ugliest plastic look new again. Happy spraying.

I figured it's not good for rubber seals, gaskets, etc... But what about something like a brake caliper? Do you take the rubber pieces off before spraying it on there, or just be sure to wipe it down quickly?

Why spray it on everything. I only use brake/carb cleaner on parts that are oily that I want to be ....... not oily.

Use some Mr. Clean or Simple Green and a hose pipe to wash the bike.

Simple Green leaves an oily residue – does Mr Clean?

Contact cleaner seems to leave a part bone-dry. I don't use it to wash the entire bike – just bolts and stuff when I take them off.

Well, you said everything. For cleaning parts like nuts bolts internals and anything else oily, I use the cheap Super Tech Carb Cleaner from Wal-Mart. But don't get it near anything painted, printed, rubber, and some plastics. Its stout.

For greasy dirty stuff I'll first use PJ-1 Filter Cleaner and a hose, then carb cleaner.

You're right – I wasn't specific enough. I meant is it bad to use it on hard parts like magnesium cases, etc.

That's a good idea to use filter cleaner on greasy stuff first, then carb cleaner.

I love that stuff but as much as I use Wal-Mart has break clean for $1.98 a can
