I'm an under-educated dumbass, please explain, in brief layman's terms - how these

smashing of atoms can help unlock secrets of the universe ?

Not being a wise-ass here, I'm genuinely curious.

Rup, I've been "concerned" about this thing since I first heard about it years ago. I'd put it in the same category as gasoline cookstoves in the kitchen...hydrogen filled air machines...thalidomide...agent orange. Just because you CAN do a thing, doesn't mean you SHOULD do a thing. I just imagine a group of the worlds biggest eggheads saying, "WATCH THIS"....followed by, "CRAP".

Understood, but I still don't get what they are hoping to achieve - I know this thing

cost zillions and has miles of pipes and shtuff, like a Pro-Circuit spaceship on

Obama money with a nitrous oxide bottle designed by Texas ?

They are trying to recreate Nuclear fusion.

Google Nuclear fusion and it might help you understand.

Trying to find out what the smallest particles of matter are. They smash the cores of atoms together and see what flies off when they collide.

In the moment right after the big bang, it's theorized that all matter was in the form of elementary particles. So technically creating these sub atomic particles recreates the moments of the early universe.

Seeing these particles for the first time and observing their behaviors allows scientists to test mathematical theory against observation. The Higgs Boson particle, if observed, would show proof of concept for theories like string theory and multiple dimensions/universes.

Being such an "uneducated dumbass" , You ask questions that are above your category. Please refrain or we will have to reorganize the criteria.

atoms are the building block for all creation, in that everything made is made from atoms/differant combinations of atoms

but yeah they are just wasting money!

In particle physics, antimatter is the extension of the concept of the antiparticle to matter, where antimatter is composed of antiparticles in the same way that normal matter is composed of particles. For example, an antielectron (a positron, an electron with a positive charge) and an antiproton (a proton with a negative charge) could form an antihydrogen atom in the same way that an electron and a proton form a normal matter hydrogen atom. Furthermore, mixing matter and antimatter would lead to the annihilation of both in the same way that mixing antiparticles and particles does, thus giving rise to high-energy photons (gamma rays) or other particle–antiparticle pairs.

There is considerable speculation as to why the observable universe is apparently almost entirely matter, whether there exist other places that are almost entirely antimatter instead, and what might be possible if antimatter could be harnessed, but at this time the apparent asymmetry of matter and antimatter in the visible universe is one of the greatest unsolved problems in physics. The process by which this asymmetry between particles and antiparticles developed is called baryogenesis.

What is a "dirt bike forum" ?

Is that some news-group ?
