What flicks, very possibly well off the beaten path, whether they be Hollywood rejects,

Indy flicks or foreign films, do you recommend to us pretenders-to-be-patrons

-of-the-arts ?

Yeah, Hard Candy, the girl from Juno is in it. Also the one about Bob Crane, Greg Kinnear is in it.

The man who would be king reminds me of:

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Cant go wrong at all with a Terry Gilliam Film.

memento is always a good choice. As is reservoir dogs. Not as obscure as some, but not mainstream.

Butterfly Effect - A young man blocks out harmful memories of significant events of his life. As he grows up, he finds a way to remember these lost memories and a supernatural way to alter his life.

Ashton Kutcher is pretty good in this flick.
Ethan Suplee is in too but you may not reconize him (Earl's brother Randy)

11:14 - The events leading up to an 11:14 PM car crash, from five very different perspectives.

Too many stars to list...

I don't know how "obscure" these really are, and they are pretty recent, but a lot of people I mention them to never heard of 'em:

Lucky Number Slevin
Thank You for Smoking
Burn After Reading (2008)

You beat me to it. Never understood why it wasn't better known.

For Westerns try "Valdez is Coming".

John Huston film, Nominated for 4 Oscars, Golden Globe, the Score is still used today in trailers.

Great film.

One of my favorite lame movies of all time is "Short Time". It's about a cop who's about to retire when he finds out he has some rare terminal disease and only has a week or so to live. He goes from "short timer" (i.e., scarred shitless he's gonna get shot) to trying everything he can to get shot because the only way his son will inherit a big paycheck if he gets KIA. I love that movie but it's definitely off the beaten path.

Yeah but if you mention it people look at you like they've never heard of it. One of Connery's very best.

I caught this again the other night. Hadn't seen it in ages and forgot how good it was. Sometimes listed as "Queimada". One of Brando's more interesting films.

Director Pontecorvo caught a lot of flak at the time for giving it a leftist slant but I think he was fairly accurate. Ravishing photography, a good cast and a very moody Morricone score. Brando's role as the hired mercenary who is willing to play both sides is a good one.

A film of the 60s.
