I may (probably) have stole more chain than I can swim with. My neighbor has a Radiobar, which is a brand name that was made in the 30's. This console is really cool. It opens up into a bar but also has a Philco radio built in. The radio is from 1935 and is a model 625. 3 bands, 1 AM and 2 short wave. I am currently restoring the radio. If I cant get that working then then the project is over, Not going to restore the console.
This id the console.

This is with the bar opened up.

This is the chassis. So for I have replace most of the capacitors and all of the out of tolerance resistors.
I powered it up for the first time today and no smoke. Yay. No signal though.

Fucking thing is close to 90 years old so it's going to take some tinkering. I took the tubes to a place that has an old school tube checker. It was too new. It couldn't test these old tubes. LOL.
Anyway, if I can get the radio going then I will do all the refinishing on the console. I'm doing a YT vid as things progress so I can easily send links to friends.

I will probably post up a video pretty soon showing the radio restoration. I have a few more leaky caps to replace plus some over all cleaning on the chassis and exposed components.
This veneer is really open grained.
Any ideas?
It helps when staining woods like oak, maple, etc...
That has a combination of dense and porous grains that take stain differently.
There's a time window for staining after you've applied if.
The directions on the can will explain it.
Our finishers says he uses a paint, or lacquer thinner to do the same.
But I honestly think that will strip some of the tone of the wood away.
P.S.
You got lucky with 150 grit on that veneer, that you didn't burn through it.
part 2 is now up on Youtube.
Awesome project Borg!
Pit Row
Cool project.
You simply cannot rebuild that thing unless you use a oldschool Simpson meter. All them LCD meters will scare away the vintage radio ghosts and it wont work.
Youre gonna need some DeOxit too. Good luck and if you start noodling around with a soldering iron, put a dim bulb in there so you dont let the smoke genie out of the bottle.
I don't have a Simpson but this one works as long it's in the same room with the the other meters.
here is a pic of my 1936 Stewart Warner radio I found in the back of a motorcycle shop in Atlanta a few years ago. It does not work. I placed a speaker inside it and wired it to my shop stereo.
You have a model number?
My guess is that it's an R-1365-A Probably built in 1934.
I will look for a model #. Where would it be located?
I picked this up about 5 years ago for $50. Back then I researched it based on its looks and came up with 1936, it could be anything. Here is a pic of the face.
