I may (probably) have stole more chain than I can swim with. My neighbor has a Radiobar, which is a brand name that was made in the 30's. This console is really cool. It opens up into a bar but also has a Philco radio built in. The radio is from 1935 and is a model 625. 3 bands, 1 AM and 2 short wave. I am currently restoring the radio. If I cant get that working then then the project is over, Not going to restore the console.

This id the console.

This is with the bar opened up.

This is the chassis. So for I have replace most of the capacitors and all of the out of tolerance resistors.
I powered it up for the first time today and no smoke. Yay. No signal though.

Fucking thing is close to 90 years old so it's going to take some tinkering. I took the tubes to a place that has an old school tube checker. It was too new. It couldn't test these old tubes. LOL.

Anyway, if I can get the radio going then I will do all the refinishing on the console. I'm doing a YT vid as things progress so I can easily send links to friends.

Hey Borg. Cool project!! I tried looking around YouTube for your channel/link. I couldn’t find it. Would you mind sending me the link? Thanks

Love it. I have gotten rid of so much cool vintage stuff over the years. Now I'm retired and have time but no cool stuff left. I had a really nice Bang and Olufsen console... fantastic design...gone. I really liked playing with the short wave.

That's cool. Thanks. I have no delusions of becoming a Youtuber. I put stuff on there so I can just give links to friends and others who might be interested in what I'm doing. It's easier than dropbox. Most of my friends don't even know what it is. I'm going to delete the stock analysis stuff. The crazy looking guy at Dodger stadium is/was my brother.

As a life long woodworker and cabinetmaker, I'm green with envy with your chance to get that awesome cabinet operating again.

Will subscribe to watch the progress.

Radio is working now so the project is a go. Without that it was a no go. Luckily I can still get nitro lacquer which will make the refinishing a lot easier. A lot of the upper part of the cabinet is veneer so I am real hesitant to strip and sand. It's in pretty good condition except for one little spot where the veneer is beginning to de laminate and crack.
I will probably post up a video pretty soon showing the radio restoration. I have a few more leaky caps to replace plus some over all cleaning on the chassis and exposed components.

That's cool. I had a similar one in my bedroom when I was a kid. Never knew where it came from or why it got shoved in there.

Well, I'm having an issue that you may be able to help me with. I decided to strip it down to bare wood after I was forced to on the very top. It had a lot of scratches and burns that I was not going to be able to repair so I hit it with some 150 and my RO sander and it came out really nice. So I did the same with both of the upper swingout sections and they look really good. I did go over it with 320, wet it down and 320 again. Because the edges will be stained almost black, I need to seal the veneer before I apply the really dark solid stain because if I get it on the mahogany veneer, I'll never get it out. At this point, I don't know how thin the veneer is after stripping it and i dont want to sand it anymore. Well I sprayed 2 coats of lacquer on the bare wood and it did not come out very good. It's splotchy like you sometimes get with stain if you're not careful. I'm pretty sure what happened is there are areas where the old lacquer soaked in very deep and I 'm really afraid to sand it anymore. It's was obvious when I sprayed it that some areas were sealed more that others because it went glossy right away. I'm hoping that as soon as the entire surface is sealed and the lacquer starts to build, that it will start blending better.
This veneer is really open grained.
Any ideas?

I've used stain/wood conditioner in the past.
It helps when staining woods like oak, maple, etc...
That has a combination of dense and porous grains that take stain differently.

There's a time window for staining after you've applied if.
The directions on the can will explain it.

Our finishers says he uses a paint, or lacquer thinner to do the same.
But I honestly think that will strip some of the tone of the wood away.

P.S.
You got lucky with 150 grit on that veneer, that you didn't burn through it.

What complicates the situation is that I'm not using a stain. You can see right away when stain goes blotchy and you have some options to even it out. Paint thinner and a rag usually works. My hope is that some of it goes away as the the areas with still open grain seal off. I have only done the top so far and because of the size of this console the top is really not that much of a feature. It's 46" tall. It's the front and side panels and the swing out panels that are the visual focal point. I will have to do some research on methods of prepping.

Cool project.

You simply cannot rebuild that thing unless you use a oldschool Simpson meter.     All them LCD meters will scare away the vintage radio ghosts and it wont work.  Wink

Youre gonna need some DeOxit too.    Good luck and if you start noodling around with a soldering iron,  put a dim bulb in there so you dont let the smoke genie out of the bottle.

I don't have a Simpson but this one works as long it's in the same room with the the other meters.

here is a pic of my 1936 Stewart Warner radio I found in the back of a motorcycle shop in Atlanta a few years ago. It does not work. I placed a speaker inside it and wired it to my shop stereo.

You have a model number?

My guess is that it's an R-1365-A Probably built in 1934.

I will look for a model #. Where would it be located?

I picked this up about 5 years ago for $50. Back then I researched it based on its looks and came up with 1936, it could be anything. Here is a pic of the face.
