K&N

Edited Date/Time 1/18/2012 7:35am
I was thinking of getting a K&N filter system for my truck! Does anyone here have one on there truck? Does it make a noticeable difference in power or mileage? Are they worth $250 plus?

You're talking about a cold air intake.
When I first read it, I thought you meant a filter

I run the filter, but not the full intake

I hate K&N filters. I have a pickup that came with a K&N FIPK system and I don't want to touch that thing but it is filthy. I wish I could just go down to Autozone and buy a new paper filter.

they don't filter out as much dust - thus increased air flow and possible hp gain. I did on my old truck and didn't notice mileage increase, but seemed peppier when I hammered it at a stoplight. I felt cool doing that, especially when the tires chirped.

I have the whole intake system on an 02' Durango. It makes a noticable difference for sure. First off it is really loud. It kinda sounds like a carbed 350 with the air bowl lid turned over, only louder. It will ring your ears in the mountains. The biggest difference is in the throttle position. Where I would normally use a 1/4 throttle I can now use an 1/8th, 1/2 would be 1/4 ect. and get the same result. Its deffinately more peppy but it is mostly noticed in the peddle position. I'm under the impression that if you do the intake that you need to do the exhaust to get fuel milage results and full performance results. I just have they intake system and mine is diffinately sucking more air in then it is exhausting. I want to put duals on it but I don't really want a loud truck sounding exhaust either. I think the intake and exhaust combination is where you might see some fuel milage gains. I still get about the same with just the intake system. My Durango is an automatic and it did smooth out the shifting and gave me a lot more control of how it shifts. If I want it to kick down a gear it is pretty predictable in making it do so. It will also carry a gear a little farther then it would before if you don't want it to kick down. I like it. It is a more fun vehicle to drive then without the intake and the sound will for sure turn some heads. I'm looking to put one on my 300M.

What an amazing coincidence.

I got a call this morning from K&N
Seems they run Ei in their show cars and race cars.
Said was a 25oF difference in the 55 Bel-Air Show car

So they wanted to get some from me, instead of from a shop and work out some support deal.
So I mentioned this thread and that I had a filter and wanted a cool air intake, and guess what??

One is not on its way.

So, give me a couple weeks and I will be better able to answer this question

A cold air intake will give your truck a different tone when you stomp on the gas. But, the CAI is just half of the solution. Ok...you uncorked the air inlet into the engine, now you need to uncork the air leaving the engine. So now you need to spent $400-500 on an exhaust system to uncork the other side. THEN you will see a big difference in performance.

But just an intake, it will sound mean and give you that "cool" factor, but otherwise...umm...not much else.

BTW...I have a K&N Series 77 CAI on my Titan.

Every World of Outlaws engine Ive looked at uses a K&N, same with ASCS, and every stock car & sprint car guy Ive known (including myself) used K&N with great results. No junk gets into the engine. Most WoO engines cost 50k and the ASCS are about 25k - those dudes trust those engines to K&N for a reason; they work and work well. And a dry slick dirt track makes as much dust as any unprepped MX track.

No, the "Guess not" was in reference to their having a thermostat in the 55 Bel Air

An oiled filter is great. Especially in dusty conditions. A million mile warranty is nice too. You just have to clean it every oil change.

Most filters work better with a layer of dirt on them.

I just tell the d-bag at the car wash to throw a new air filter in every few oil changes. I don't think I know how to open the hood on any of my vehicles.

I cleaned mine every oil change and could not believe how much crap came out(old 440 Dodge van) . Now I am cheap and lazy. I just buy a Fram every 10,000 miles.

I've used K&N filters for years, have one on my crf, IMO they are the best filters , I was just wondering about the intake system! Thanks for the input everyone! Post up Ice Head when you get yours installed and let us know what you think.

Its funny how so many people have different results with these filters. I used to run K&N filters on my sandcar. It has a twin turbo, corvette Ls2 engine. Around 750HP. I mostly run at the dunes( Glamis) and ive had nothing but bad luck with these. The last straw was I pulled them off to clean, and there was a fine silt/sand inside the turbos. I chucked the K&N's and switched to AEM dry filters, and have had much better luck. Most guys I dune with, have also had bad luck with the K&N's. They dont filter worth a shit IMO. Not sure if its due to the turbos sucking in so much air or??? Check out the AEM's, they work great!
