IBM tower using Windows XP.

After a recent thunderstorm the computer screen says No operating System Found

Anyone have any idea what happened or how to fix it?

Is there a control F11 combo , or is it toast?

New hard drive...

did you create system recovery disks? It's REALLY easy to swap it out.

check yer hard drive serial number and see if it is under warranty. many hdd manus have websites that you can check and see if it is covered.

4 all you folks...never ever throw yer hdd's away without first checking the manu websites for a freee replacement

The new computer is less then 45 days old, closer to 30 days old actually.


This sucks. I do have a Windows XP disk that came with the system computer, so if I have to go to the store and get a new HD i can probably install it and start fresh.

well, it would be covered if it wasn't for the thunderstorm...

a 500gig hd is under 100 bucks. Pull your case apart, note how the old one is in there, then swap it out. Put your recovery disc in the comp and boot it up. Follow the instructions. You will be up and running in a couple of hours.

If yours was fried due to the storm, they won't replace it.

I feel like an expert. I have been through 4 hard drives since Nov. First was just old, the next two were Seagates that had an issue from the factory and this last one, I got the blue screen, comp wouldn't boot. I used the recovery discs, ran a scan and it was fixable. Of course, I had to reload all my software and the like.

Looks to me like it fixed itself. Only thing left to do is to install Linux.

The first thing to do is make sure all the connections are good to the hard drive. I don't know how many times I've received a computer for service with that message and all that needed to be done was unplug and replug the power and data cables to the hard drive. Especially SATA cables seem to be very easy to work loose.

If the hard drive is dead, the manufacturer of your UPS unit or surge protector should cover the full cost of the repair.

FYI
I had a HD crash. installed new drive re-installed xp but could not read any files on old drive. computer would hang and drive would get pretty hot.
purchased a a program called recover my files and it was able to pull files of the old drive.

Well it seems like the inside of the computer was really hot. its only 30 days old. The other computer next tp it still works fine and i don't think the storm had anything to do with it. I think maybe the HD just went bad or maybe it overheated.

It was mentioned above, but you should have your PC on a UPS. It will provide protection and isolation from lightning.

Sounds like the other guys hit the nail on the head.

The only thing I could add is donate the pc and buy a Mac!

Oh.... yeah, that makes sense since a lighting strike would never take out a MAC. I forgot they were electric charge proof! Oh.. I forgot, they are immune to a bullet through the case as well. You know, I did hear about this guy that took his MAC into his bathtub and used it under water. Damn those things are incredible!!
