Chestermere seams a very nice plays to live just east of Calgary.

Just start looking online for oilfield jobs...Lots wI'll be coming up. I would suggest Cochrane west of the city or Okotoks south of the city, rather than Chestermere, it's overpriced and the lake is just gross, it's just the irragation canal that is damed up at one end. It's basically a sea weed farm. East or North sucks. West and south West are good.
Northern BC or Alberta is where you would have the best opportunities. Being willing to start in more remote communities like Fort St. John, Rainbow Lake, Zama, Fox Creek, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, etc. The Southern jobs generally pay less and of course, more people compete for them as they don't necessarily want to do shift work in camps, or don't want to leave their families for extended periods. In the oil and gas industry in remote areas, common shifts are usually 10 days on with 4 days off, 14 days on with 7 days off, 21 days with 7 days off, with the normal hours at 10 hours per day. Maximum days worked is 24 after which, a minimum of 4 days off is required.

frozen over lakes in the winter are fun for the kids so they can go ice skating if that's aloud.
I'm a very home orientated person i would rather spend a few extra bucks on a nice home than to have a holiday home somewhere else, If i would have that amount of money to spare sure i'll by more property but thats to flip it or rent it out. there is no such thing as unlimited funds so i like to have some things as a back up. For the old days :D

Once again i would like to thank all of you guys for the information given, or just some cool pictures with stories i really appreciate all of you. And i hope to find a way to get there and we can all laugh and joke about it at our house warming party.
Just to set the record straight, I was telling you why we have a boat show here in Calgary and where people use them....this is my "Vacation Home" I bought if for $ 1800 and parked it on our lot that has been in our family for 20 years, it has not moved in 8 years, I take my summer vacation out at the lake, but have to work a 9-6 in the city to afford to ski and ride....."I'm not a baller, I own a Toyota Tacoma and a Toyota Sienna...lol, and I take used boats from my store out to the lake, I can not personally afford a lake property or a boat, I'm just lucky. In the calgary area there are hundreds of great places an hour or 2 drive from the city to take your kids camping, if you have a cheap trailer like mine, you will not have to worry about a bear eating your family at night, they can smell food from 30 km away so you need to be a smart camper around here, rumor has it the prefer the taste of Europeans the best....Me and my riding buddies all have total pile of shit trailers like this, and go camping and crush beers, riding, swimming, what ever..the farther you get away from the city the less douche bags you have to deal with, smaller campers like mine will allow you to sneak in far great camping spots that a big rv will not....

Foghorn has great points here Andy. If you want to work Oil and Gas one really has to start working "in Camp" which means you are working in the middle of nowhere living in a remote camp, you will have to find a place for your family to live(Most live in Southern Alberta where they rent/buy a home for their family to live in) Dad then works 2 weeks on(lives in camp) them comes home for a week. The pay checks are great but family life perhaps not. Once a person have put in the time and made the right contacts the seem to find work closer to home of in the corporate offices in Calgary/Edmonton/Red/Deer. I have never worked a day in the Oil and gas industry though, but many of my customers do. The are also lots of every day jobs in the big cities, but pay will be a tad "average" compared to Oil and gas camp type jobs. Its all about what you need and what makes you happy. I have worked in the bike industry here in Calgary for almost 2 decades, life is good.

Andy- If you are a capable mechanic there are plenty of companies in the oil and gas business looking for good techs. If you need some contact names at some of the bigger companies shoot me a PM.. I provide many of those companies product support as they use our equipment for gas compression, transmission..etc.

As foghorn has mentioned the areas above are a bit remote, but some may be close to Calgary, Leduc..etc..

A picture from my back deck the other day. We got about a foot of snow over the weekend and temps in the minus 20s. As per Scooter's note, it's warming up and should be about plus 10C here by next week. Chinook winds are a great thing even if it means a slush fest on the streets.

Cool. That's not too far out. I work downtown, so a 6 minute drive for me.

I have been a semi factory mechanic for Scott KTM in both Womens ( Nathalie Kane ) world championship as in the MX1 (Nikolai Paschinsky) world championship so don't know if that counts? And have been a mechanic in the EMX2 and MX3 championship for privateers.
I'm paying attention and tend to learn quickly ( i use common sense basically and that got me to where i'm at today )
I don't have a big degree or anything but my heads on straight and work my ass off if given the chance so please feel free to get me in contact with these people. You can tell them i'm willing to start at the very bottom i just want an opportunity and I'll prove my worth from there on.

I live in Red Deer, smaller city dead center between Calgary and Edmonton. Lots of jobs here, traffic is dick all and they have all the stores and whatever you need right in town. Its a little further from the mountains but theres a couple decent lakes nearby.

If you do move here just be sure if you're ever flying anywhere to double check your ticket. I made that mistake at Xmas, drove to the wrong airport and had to spend another $1000 on new tickets. Its one of very few places where there are 2 airports withing an hour and a half drive lol.

What part of Canada did they let the guy out of jail that cut off a man's head on a bus a few years back?

Said he wasn't a threat to society now.
I'd probably avoid that area.

Winnipeg Manitoba, likely. His crime occurred 40 miles away from there. It's a long story, Google it.

He is schizophrenic,no monitoring,no way he stays on the meds.

Good friend got it after highschool. ,it was bad. He thought people were after him, aliens were landing. He ended up shooting a cop in a chase and lucky not to die.

On meds since.

Last oilfield company I worked for was DFI. I had an Aussie and 2 Mexicans working with me. One of the dudes from Mexico was my operator on the hydrovac. Guy was chill af, really into Beastie Boys. I've never laughed as hard as I did listening to him sing along with his accent to Fight For Your Right.

I know they are willing to bring people in from other countries. The guys that work there are cool, management are a bunch of douche nozzles though.

It's worth a look. Google DFI Red Deer

My thoughts on Canada:

I have owned small businesses in Canada and in the USA. It is infinitely easier to run a successful business in the USA. Over regulation in almost any endeavor you can imagine makes it an uphill battle all the way.

CBC, the state-run media company, has an extreme bias. If you lean the other way, it is hard to watch (TV) or listen to (radio). Your taxes pay for it either way.

Canada is hell bent on importing immigrants in the name of diversity.

If I could have found a way to stay in the USA legally, I would have. I see now that I should have stayed illegally and would have been welcomed with open arms.

Andy, I live 2000 miles from where I was born, as the crow flies, and I'm only three provinces away. (please note that, so I don't have to see to it your application is turned down. Provinces, not states) This isn't Europe, our provinces are bigger than a lot of countries over there.
