Do you know what happened 158 years ago this fall... back in 1850?


California became a state.

The people had no electricity.

The state had no money.

Almost everyone spoke Spanish.

There were gunfights in the streets.

So basically nothing has changed except the women had real breasts and the men didn't hold hands.

No... he is correct about the Spanish part. They spoke it in 1850 because it was Mexico prior to 1850 (remember the Mexican-American war 1846-48) and it was Spain prior to 1821 (starting in about 1550 "New Spain") and it is the language of choice now. I live here... trust me... English is the second language by choice!!!! Woohoo

Spanish was the choice of language to some but not all. Actually Russian and English were very prevalent. Prior to the Gold Rush of 1849, Russian fur traders were all over California, then Alta California. The reason Spanish was the choice was due to the Missions and Father Junípero Serra. Since the schools were being taught from the missions, by Spaniards that was the language.

Shortly after the Chinese population skyrocketed in 1855 when they migrated west for work.

California was Mexico by map but in reality it was quite isolated and semi autonomous. Run by the governors in the north and the south and dependent on the hide and tallow trade. Most of the goods came from ships from the eastern US rather than routes from Mexico. CA would of probably never been settled had Spain not feared losing it to Russia or England.
