Hey everyone, so a few weeks ago I got some door dings and scatter on the door, wheel panels and front bumper of my car repainted.

I had a potential buyer point out that the newly painted areas do not match.

I had the hood and roof panel repainted by a different shop due to crap falling on it from a tree in a storm. They match the rear section just fine.

But the passenger door, front wheel panels and bumper don’t match the rear section or hood.

Hard to see but you can see the newly painted areas area a slightly lighter shade.

The shop claims they matched the paint code.

Are they lying or is the batch off?

Could it be from a primer issue?

Could it be related to the clear coat, maybe not applied properly or while paint wasn’t cured?

Just pretty pissed because I paid $950 in deductibles for this, and already lost $10-$11k on a potential sale (I owe $8,500 on the car and it was appraised @ $20.5k with a car fax history value @ $18.9k).

Anything that would cause this beyond unmatched paint?

Bumpers rarely match when oem paints them either . Plastic has a static charge that causes the metallic to lay different than on metal. Paint metal part and plastic at the same time they still may look different. The paint code still may have many variances on that color. Some have over 10 and even then may only be a blendable match . Even the temp of day when sprayed can cause paint to look different . I own a body shop so I might know what I am saying?

The bumper I could understand.

But the doors and front wheel well panels are all metal.

Thanks for the response though 👍 trying to figure something out before I take it in.

They should at least done a spray out sheet to see how their choice would compare to the car. Then tint their color or adjust air pressure to make their color closer .

I know enough about paint and body, Used Car Manager, to be dangerous. That’s a pretty poor burn/blend job. Earl Schieb, or your insurance went with the low bidder. The pictures depict a pretty low level of effort. Maybe that was the best they could do. Either way, hope you’re taking it somewhere else for correction. Repainting a car is redonkulous!

See lots of Pearl White mismatches.

I’m overly paranoid and went with a shop my insurance (Geico) guarantees. So if the shop doesn’t right it, insurance will. Or they violate an SLA in the insurance contract and... yeah.

I was initially pissed because of paint, but I thought it may originally have been possibly clear coat. But after looking at it today in better light. They definitely used a bad paint match.

I’m just kind of heated because I found a buyer after it was listed for 5 days and this fuck up just outed me $10k+ into my pocket.

I had a hood and door fixed a couple of years ago. Went to pick it up and I could totally see the repair spots, I refused to take the car. The painter came out and initially said he couldn't see anything, but after a bit he admitted he could see it. They painted it again and this time it's right on.

My last truck was black and someone rear ended me in an suv, buckled the bed so they replaced the entire bed side. From what they told me it wasn't simply matching the paint code, it also depended on how old the vehicle/paint was and it was more tricky to match. In short, they basically said they made their own mix to match the rest of my truck.

Problem is it was dusk when I picked it up and when I drive it I’m obviously getting in the driver side so didn’t see it for a few weeks.

I’m with you, if I saw that on delivery I absolutely would not have taken it.

I just threw out clear coat and such because I’m 100% ignorant when it comes to painting. It just looks like a straight up trash blend because they metal and plastic sections they did all match each other. Just not existing panels.

I talked to Geico and they said I can take to a caliber collision closer to me once they do their procedure. Dude told me he just wants to do their stuff first to ensure I don’t pay anything out of pocket so they’re making it right.

When I was an automotive refinisher, Chrysler/Plymouth had a color called “Ice blue poly” ... with several variances. I could never get that color to match, even tinting & blending it was a 50/50 proposition at best. The other painters & myself would take turns whenever a car came in with that color, none of us had it down. It was not uncommon to blow a whole side of a car for a fender Job just to be done with it....good times...

A reputable shop would have blended the adjoining panels, only way to make the differences in the colors not obvious. Colors can fade due to UV rays, blending in the proper thing to do.
