watching A1, I was thinking about Dungey's blown motor replacement. Do they put the standby motors in a bike, run them through break in, then pull them? I suppose that would make sense.

I believe certain elements of the engine that went through tech needs to be in the bike. I don't believe a full swap can be done.

Wardy? AMA guys? Whats the ruling on this?

Not sure now, but back in the day engines were swapped regularly, and you could swap frames but 1st you had to take the replacement bare frame to the Ref to tag it, then reassemble. (I guess they did that so you couldn't just bring out a backup bike).

I'm pretty sure they can swap engines between heats. All the teams carry spare engines in the trailers for this purpose.

I checked AMA Sports for a pro rulebook, AMA Pro does not have one for Motocross, this year or past. And proposed changes are not available either. In short the website follows consistent AMA protocol. FUBAR

Just need clarification on technical aspects.

OK understanding a swap can be done. Someone like Dungey who with a team of money. AMA Tech comes over to watch the swap for speed and kept in the rules. Does a sound check etc, signs off on it, they are back in the tunnel.

What about the Privateers? They do a swap, do they get the same courtesy?

Blown motors nowadays are even more so than before.
Especially in the 250F's.
That's clearly the most expensive division to be in hands
down, motor wise, & she's more so in the Outdoors.
Top 250F teams leave nothing to chance, not that the 450's
do, but top 250F's are high strung, high reving, time bombs!
Sure 2stks were similar at this level, but the 4stks. have just so
much more going on. On a 2stk. usually, pull in the clutch, when
a sound is heard or felt. On a 4stk. that's usually to too late.
There's even more injuries due to 4stks.
But back to the question at hand, yes, motors are swapped out
all the time & it's legal as long as they are. Most are pre-ran on
dynos or in the field but rest assured the top teams are always
ready for when the "fire drill" happens.

That fire drill would be impressive to watch.

How many minutes do you think it takes a team to do a swap?
From the moment the bike gets on the stand to the minute a rider can swing a leg back over it.

With air tools and 2-3 people working on it, I can't see it taking more then 15-20 minutes

i agree. those guys know the bikes so well, i would say 15 minutes would be within reason.

The best of teams practice!
This I know, & yet you always have to
keep a clear head. It's actually best
when the least amount of crew are involved!
To too many leads to mistakes. Funny, crashes
or motors do happen, yet everytime you learn something!
Every stinkin time!

15-20 minutes would be easy for them. Myself, and 2 other techs once did an engine swap (2 complete bikes, one blown engine) with hand tools, on a YZF600 at the racetrack in 37 minutes.

New bolts and new parts make it a lot easier to do. Being smooth and not letting the clock get to you is the tough part.

My son and I watched MotoXXX change out a motor at the Wick one year after first practice.
Two guys, 10 minutes and not one motion looked wasted, very smooth indeed..
