Before you ever think about going to Loretta's odds are you probably already have a bike, gear and have raced a little so you already have those things.

If your riding at a high level your going to be going through at least a bike a year anyways, so your correct as you probably have a bike in the garage and could just chance it and not get a fresh one. But from my experience if your going all out, committing time and effort to do some big races you need to start with a new or near new bike so you don't have issues. That's why I see it as part of the cost.
