WMX Championship Announced

Thursday December 19th, 2013

MX Sports Pro Racing, along with the AMA and participating race organizers, is pleased to announce the 2014 Women’s Motocross (WMX) Championship schedule, rules and licensing information. The eight round series will take place in conjunction with premier amateur motocross events throughout the country, beginning on March 9 and 10 with the Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross in Daytona and concluding on November 29 with the Winter Olympics in Gainesville, Fla.

Following the season opener in Daytona, the 2014 WMX Championship will headline one day at the following events: the Freestone Spring Classic in Wortham, Texas, the California Classic in San Bernardino, Calif., Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., the Baja Brawl in Millington, Mich., KROC Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., the Top Gun Showdown in Blountville, Tenn., as well as the finale in Gainesville, Fla. The 2014 championship will be determined by taking a rider’s points based on their best six of eight rounds.

“We understand that many of the WMX racers have other obligations to fulfill such as full-time jobs, which is why the premier WMX Class will race both motos on one day at each of these events, with the exception of the Daytona Amateur Supercross since it has qualifying heats and a Main Event format,” said Jeff Canfield, Director of Racing for MX Sports Pro Racing.

Riders must meet the WMX Eligibility and Criteria in order to hold a license in 2014 and all licensing must be done prior to participating an the event. For details on the eligibility and criteria, or to apply for a WMX license, please click HERE.

The WMX race format will consist of two (2) motos of 15 minutes plus one (1) lap each (with the exception of RCSX). Scoring will be based on a combined moto format to determine the overall winner for the event, in accordance with the AMA Racing Amateur Rulebook (excepting RCSX). There will be a $2,000 purse per event, paid per moto from first through tenth place. For more information on the rules and payout, please click HERE.

“The new WMX format is a result of the collaborating effort of the AMA, American Motocross organizers and our OEM stakeholders,” said MX Sports Director Tim Cotter. “We are all very excited about the future of WMX.”

Some will like it, some will not. At least it's more than 3 races. This could be the beginning of something bigger and better. Now it's up to the girls to support it and show that there is a desire to have a professional WMX series. These are some great tracks too... Daytona, Mammoth, Englishtown, Gatorback... I'd say they are getting a good deal for a reboot of the series.

They will get a ton more love at those races as opposed to the Pro ones. Hundreds of families with younger (and older sisters) already there to watch. Its a win-win situation for WMX. (In my opinion anyway, and I've been to 100's of those races!!)
BTW all those tracks are and were "pro national" at one time or the other...

Are you serious? First off, I think this is good for WMX. Instead of them playing second fiddle to the guys they can have their own series. As far as the "national championship" comment; if they want to race for a national championship, there are no rules that say they can't line up at Hangtown in May...

"Hey lets travel to a national and race with a bunch of amateurs" .........L.O.L. Stick them in the B class at any of these races and see how they do against the "amateurs."

It's cool they are doing something for the ladies but its pretty lame that they are not racing on the same weekend as the AMA Nationals. They hardly get any support to begin with but atleast racing the same weekend of the men you would see some of the ladies being sponsored and pitting with some of the big name teams.

Bring them back to the big show!!!!

Well, could this be an "excuse" to get more factory support for the ladies because the teams would also get additional looks at the upcoming talent pool? Just trying to think outside the box a little bit. If teams were on the fence about attending an amateur event with a certain level of support, this may be enough to drive them to attend or it might entice more factory support for the ladies because they will be at the events already and want to make sure they are well represented.

Arent alot of the factory teams at this event in some capacity anyways? Atleast most of the ones that are likely to sponsor a WMX racer. Teams like Geico, Myplash, Rock River, TLD, Team Green Kawasaki have some sort of presence in amateur racing and attend the big races do they not? Might even make it easier for some of the top girls to get supported rides given they are now a relatively big fish in a small pond rather then halftime entertainment at the big show.

Just my perspective on it.

There is only one chick I want to see ride...and that is Courtney. Hauls Ass... unfortunately she got busted up bad this year with multiple injuries...and is back in NZ. That is the only girl I have seen with the sort of speed that makes you think it is possible for a female to qualify for a true National. I think she could do it easily in a few years.

I hope she is back on her one-two-five.

is this really a good thing, the 3 round series was not ideal, but if Courtney had won a race on a 125 in this series format, would it have got any where near the attention the win at Hangtown got?

in europe there is mx1 and mx2 and mx3, do you know who won the mx3 series? id say most people dont, if you want to call it a national championship you gotta race with the real pros, and as far as some of you saying those girls cant beat some amatuers, well no shit, they are girls and the fastest girls in the country, its not called the national girls who race with the amateurs championship is it?
