…I’m NOT a huge Reed fan, but he has the sack to compete despite a VERY close loss in the SX series.

I was a bigger Stewart fan than Reed fan, but JBS is losing ground with me. Why? Because when you get older, the money you made today will not mean nearly as much as the regret you have when looking back and realizing your priorities were mislead by others.

Stewart will look back, if Reed wins, and point the finger at others as to why he didn’t compete. James can only look in the mirror and blame himself if Reed wins it.

As some others have mentioned, James could compete on his own dime and have equipment equal to any Factory stuff. I tell you what; Hannah wouldn’t let Reed compete without being there to go man to man.

Have any of you seen the Hannah/Howerton video? That was competition – man vs man. It wasn’t about money, just trying to prove who was the best.

So far, Reed is stepping up and Stewart isn’t. Despite being beat in the BEST SX season ever, he is still going to compete.

Prior to Reed’s announcement, I was looking forward to RV, JG, DM, AS and others going at it. Now, I want Reed to make a statement… My appreciation for CR is off the scale...

James, don’t point the finger at others if your title goes to your #1 competitor. You could’ve been there to put the stamp on the perception you are currently the best rider in the world. You didn’t take the opportunity to prove it, so it never will be… 20 years from now in a MX magazine interview, you will admit you wished you had raced the series to prove you possibly were the best.

You won’t care now, but you will later when you have a son and try to explain why you didn’t race…”but son, they weren’t willing to pay me enough to race”. “Dad, if you were the best, why didn’t you do it for free to show them you were the greatest”. “I’ve read that RC raced anyone and everyone whenever he could, why didn’t you?” “I read he was responsible for getting the USA back into the MxoN because he wanted to prove the USA was the best…”

There are so many more questions a son might ask his father why he didn’t compete when he was in his prime….

Great post mate. James championship last year in the nats has an * anyway. Chad wasn't there. HAHA. Well. That's what R-acer will be saying this year about CHad.

I totally agree though mate. I think James just doesn't want to. He is using the team not doing nats as an excuse. He knew when he signed with them it was SX only.

Im sure not going to miss him out there.

axel57,

Skill and talent are quite different than heart.

RC and Bob Hannah had more heart than anyone.

How many guys out there thrive on racing the best? They may not win, but they compete to see where they are and know inside themselves where they stand in history.

Another guy who never backed down from a fight was Magoo... He was the bravest and never gave up.

James made it a point several times this season to point out how he never quits.

I bought in to it when I watched him at Daytona.

I'm not so sure now...

really , really good post! I think some guys retire to early and some may do the SX series only , and then regret it later in life. Should of stood up like a friggin' man and do what you we're born to do....RACE!

J.S.....isn't in the same shoes as KW is either if you think about it. KW has been around for a very , very long time. James is still extremely young. he should be doing both series for a good 4-5 more years before thinking about doing a SX only deal.

Step up James and defend you title!

jeffro503,

James is a good guy, but I believe he is mislead by others in some of his decisions.

James will eventually regret not racing the 2009 Outdoor Nationals.

It won't be this year, but he will regret it.

It is human nature to blame others for misguided direction, but James must do what will make him satisfied today, but with serious consideration for the future.

The future aspects seem to be off the table based on the direction he is pursuing.

James, you need to race, defend your title, then abstain if you are in "burn out".

You have to defend a perfect record so early in your career.

RC was different, he never lost an outdoor title.

You haven't established the same credentials...

Do us and yourself the favor of stepping up when it is most important....

You will be more content when you do retire and pursue other interest...

You'll never have to explain why you didn't race the best competition you had in your day.

You didn't beat RC, but you'll possibly be able to beat CR.

If you don't, your legacy will be that you lost to RC and CR...

The end result will be an asterick (*) next to all of your significant achievements.....

I agree mate. He says he never quits, but now he is just using L&M as an excuse. IF he really wanted to do the nats, he could. As he says, he needs "a rest".

What a joke.

Well you see mate, he actually spent the whole AMA motocross season organising and fine tuning his OWN supercross series in Australia, which ended up being a huge success. He didn't sit on his ass and say he needs a "rest".

So no, he wasn't a joke.

Last year Chad wasn't trying to think he is riding the outdoors on a sx only contract.

So what would you call it when James went down in the first turn, got up (on the wrong bike, initially), started his bike (which was twisted beyond belief) and raced 20 laps around Daytona with said twisted bike, with his glove on wrong, brakes bent, etc., and fought his way to seventh in the race and had the second-fastest laptime out of everyone in doing it? Is that just "skill and talent"?

I would call it a reminder of RC's loop out remount at Pontiac 2002 SX where he caught up to 2nd with a bent visor blocking his vision.

Yup. Both required tons of heart. None of those top guys are without heart - RV, Reed, Stewart, Alessi, etc. They all have heart. It's nuts to act like you could become as fast as Stewart (or Reed or Alessi or Villopoto) without the HEART to train your butt off during the week, practice constantly, etc. Just doing that takes heart. Getting to the races and overcoming obstacles takes heart, too, but probably not as much, if you think about it. When you brush yourself off in the first turn and make the absolute best you can out of a bad situation, in some ways that's just a refusal to have done all the work during the week for nothing. Heart is waking up every day, even though you're already winning, and still hitting the track, hitting the gym, watching what you eat, etc. In my opinion, that shows more heart than 20 minutes worth of racing when the cameras are on you.
