Im in the market for a new helmet, and im wondering if helmets that pass the ECE 22.05 are safe?

its a m2r helmet to be exact and i dont know anything about their brand...Im wondering if they are trustworthy and will protect this superior intelligent brain lol.

ece 22.05 are the european standard, i would wear one of a snell helmet anyday,

as the old saying goes.....if you have a $10 head wear a $10 helmet. If you have a superior brain then I would suggest Arai, Shoei or new TLD 3

I am also looking for a new helmet but I don't feel like ponying up $550.00 for one. There has to be some good protection int eh $250 - $300 range.

there were a few auctions on ebay for the new TLD 3 for under $300, it is a $450 helmet retail.
Motosport has a shoei sale from time to time but expect to still pay over $400
but i personally swear by Arai they fit my head better than any other helmet but $600+
all of the above as in all helmets are only good for one crash as well....

Arai is famous for the long-oval shape designed for European/American heads and Shoei's have traditionally always had a rounder shape. That is because they used to sell the same helmet in the US that they sold in the Japan market.

That is now changed. For the Shoei VFX-W, the US models are definitely more oval than the Japan market helmets. I have a Japan-market one and my buddy has a US one, both same size. Mine is definitely more round and "asian shaped" than his. His fits very similar to my Arai helmets.

There are plenty of good helmets in the 200- 300 dollar range that protect your head as good as the 500 dollar helmets. There are studies out there to show this. For sure get Snell approved and the ECE is good as well.

Thats a really misinformed statement. I'm certain you can't prove to me that the Arai is safer than the M2R. There are no real standards for testing and how can you replicate any accident twice? Yeah yeah they all do their own various forms of testing, but this argument is hashed out over and over and I've never read a conclusive test showing how a Shoei or Arai were safer.

I used to do a lot of work for Made 2 Race / M2R Helmets and went into detail with them on how they build their helmets, test, etc. They're as safe as any of them, by all means.

wrt M2R, its hard to argue with that. However, subjectively, I question the consistency of production of some of the mass produced stuff.

with a Shoei/Arai (shark? eh) I don't worry about getting a Friday afternoon helmet. Ya know?

Fly makes a killer helmet in both the F2 carbon and Formula (same shell). I have one of each and they have been the best helmets I've ever had. Took a big hit to the head a couple weeks ago and broke the foam inside my F2. It did its job.Purchased another one.

Hey, its your head and your choice. But its pretty sad that you are using the this wont make me faster line as a reason to not buy a helmet that will protect your head better. There is reason that Shoeis and Arais cost 500-600.

They do fit a little differently. But my head fits in both of them well. The big difference for most people when they put the two on back to back is that the Shoeis nose piece is a little farther away from your face than the Shoei.

I don't think that is exactly what he was meaning. Honestly, I can go to the track and not see but 1 maybe 2 Shoei and I can't remember the last time I seen an Arai at the track. There has to be some good helmets in the price range mentioned. I honestly couldn't tell you why Shoei and Arai cost more. Margins?

I have. 2007 M2R and it is as good as any Shoie or Arai that I have owned. It is a carbon mix and is very light as well.

Heres my theory on the subject. I can buy a good snell rated helmet, that fits well and is comfortable for roughly $225-250. A helmet is good for 1 shot. Thats it. Now, knowing that, I am much more likely to toss the $250 helmet in the dumpster when it takes its shot than people will be with a $400+ lid. $400 is a lot of coin to drop, and people may be tempted to continue using that helmet even though its been compromised. Buy a helmet that you like, and can afford to replace when needed.
