If not... get the Honda
The Shop
Both make good bikes, I personally like the CRF better for MX, but its all what you are used too.
Actually the CRF would be my last choice!
That was a god bike.
If you liked the KTM, what has made you look at the Honda?
Why just Honda if you were going to make a change from KTM? Why not blue, green, or yellow?
Just trying to get an idea what you thinking on this is...
The '09 Honda is a pile plain and simple.
Pit Row
Just buy from a dealer that seems like a good person and is in your area. KTM, KXF, YZF, CRF, RMZ. They're all good bikes.
I don't know about all these folks claiming the CRF is a turd. Do you guys actually own one?
Here's what I can tell you about my '09 CRF 450:
It does need a remap to get the stalling and quirky throttle worked out. If not, just run the idle high. The manual calls for 1700 rpm. That's higher than you think. After break-in I've been able to idle mine down a touch and still not have probs with stalling.
The bike has great, smooth power. It's deceiving really. It doesn't hit as hard as my '05 but I can jump longer doubles out of corners that I couldn't before. It pulls long as well.
The throttle response is AMAZING compared to a carbureted bike. Absolutely no popping or crackling or hesitation. Just gobs of power when you ask for it. It really takes re-thinking throttle control.
The suspension set-up in stock for really was horrible. Both ends drifted anytime the bike was in a lean on less than smooth dirt. The front seemed to wander all over the place. I set it up like MXA recommended because that was the first review I read and it's point and shoot. Pick a line, any line and it will stick right in it. The front goes a little soft after break-in but if you're serious about riding/racing you'll want to get it worked anyway.
It's harder to clean than the previous CRFs. It has lots of little nooks and crannies like in the rear fender and underneath where mud and muck likes to hide.
Ergonomics are great. The bike is really light and you can feel that all over.
The front corners of the number plates have a tendency to hang on my boots.
As for the KTM. I made about 5 laps on one when I first got mine. The front suspension takes forever to break in. It had decent power but didn't seem as strong in the mid range but was less smooth as well. It felt tall and top heavy. Around here the parts for the KTM are more expensive and hard to find.
