I ran 2 motos almost back to back yesterday. Coming off the line on the second, the bike had a little bog to it( Just enough to give me a mid pack start)

I felt it one more time on the first lap and then it went away. Came off the track and had a slow ride back to the pits(traffic) there was some coolant coming out of the overflow when I shut it off.

Does this sound like overheating?

4-strokes run very hot. I used to boil gas out of my vent tube on my KX450. I put a heat shield between my carb and pipe. I also added the thermal shield stuff on my tank. I went up on the pilot jet and the leak jet. Fixed my problem for the most part. I do however still loose coolant through the over flow hose so I keep check and fill as needed.

Sounds to me like it may be running a little lean.

Your problem here is that your bike has 2 extra strokes. Whistling

My smoker never gets too hot - the more I ride it, the easier it is to light up. Whats all these complaints about over heating?

Ooooh, this is about 4-strokes.

Never mind.

Idling or riding slow is death to a four stroke... death...

Got to keep moving and keep air flowing over those radiators, no moving air, no cooling... no matter what you have in it.

It started overflowing after you shut it off due to heat soak.

But what do I know?

Heat soak is when the engine has a lot of stored heat in it and with the cooling system turned off (mechanical systems) it has no way to cool itself and for a period of time actually builds heat.
This is why many like electric fans on cooling systems

I wish people would STFU about the 2 stroke this and 2 stroke that. My CRF 450 is by far the easiest to ride, best bike I have ever owned and I have never had a major problem with any of my 4 strokes.

Move on already.

Honestly?

Not really.

Moving air is the only real remedy.

I would own something like this and put it in front of my bike immediately after riding

Put the bike on it's stand and let it idle while you spray water on the radiators.

or buy a 2-stroke

probably just let it idle to long in between the motos. unless you riding off the track and right back onto the gate right before it drops i would shut it off for as long as you can. you have to keep an eye on the coolant between rides too. they like to boil out a little bit here and there and after so long going unchecked the coolant gets way low and don't do squat for ya. 2-strokes do it to don't let them fool ya. i see guys all the time revving them like crazy while they are on the line or waiting to get let out onto the track for practice with coolant blowing out the overflow.

BTW, one thing I have also come to realize is that many folks overfill the system.

Are you one of those guys who seems to "burn" coolant every time you ride? Are you adding an ounce or two every time you ride and wondering why?

You're overfilling it.

DO NOT FILL THE RADIATOR TO THE TOP.

You're not leaving room for expansion when you fill to the top. That is why it is spitting some out every time you ride.

When you look in the radiator, see that core in there? Fill just to the top of that core, not to the top. Do not "Top off."

But what do I know?

Might not have had time between moto's, but I've seen people overheat their 4strokes sitting on the line waiting for the gait to drop tons of times, especially back when 4 strokes were just starting to get popular.

Non of my 4 strokes ever loaded up. Never needed to rev the shit out it like alot of guys do.

They don't like to idle, at all.

If it was my kid on the line, I'd tell him to not even kick it until the starter points down the line or puts up the card.... the very last second

Thats true too. I see guys all the time leaning their bikes to get as much in there as possible. i like to leave a little air gap like flarider says. I run mine about half way up between the core and cap on my yamaha. it will only boil any out during a slow muddy race or a sandy race. After that the coolant level is right at the top of the core. i always fill it back up to the normal running level. the slick set up would be one of those little catch cans like on the factory race bikes so it will suck the coolant back in as the bike cools back down.

I had not checked it since the first day I brought it home. Checked it last night and it was just above the core as you said.

Fired up first kick!
