Moved to Northern France, Amiens, from Illinois for work. I am supposed to be here for 3 years and was hoping to buy a bike and get involved with the local moto scene as that seems to be the biggest part missing now. I don't speak much French yet but I am starting lessons either this week or next. Can anybody help me out with what I have to do in terms of fees, sanctioning cards, types of tracks I might find here, and how much motocross or riding of any type I might be able to find here.

I appreciate any and all help.

Here is a list of tracks from moto verte:

Also you wil be close enough to go to Holland & Belgium in the winter to ride ( Lierop, Valkensward, Hondaland etc).

There is an awesome sandtrack in Dunkirk ( directly north of Amiens) right on the beach near the ferry dock which would be a great place to practice once the rain sets in .

The MX scene is very big in France so you should be able to find meetings etc easily

Wow Amiens must be quite a change!!! Should be a good experience though and surely you'll be able to relate to the experience the US riders have when they come to do the GPs.

The equivalent of Vitalmx in France is mx2k.com there is a forum section in there that quite a lot of people use I'm sure if you post a message in there even in English some people will help you out.

I think you need a licence from either the french federation (FFM) or there is another smaller one called ufolep. I think there is a quick exam to show the official you can ride a bike steadily and not kill yourself and with that you should be able to access most official tracks. Don't expect them to be well prepared as in the US though. A lot of people ride in the woods as well. You're not far from Belgium as well if you want to taste a bit of famous Lommel sand!!

As said look at

Motoverte.com
motardimpression.com

Quick search and looks like there is a trcak close to Amiens. look for 'Moto Club Picard'

You're a lucky guy! Not many Americans get to experience being a part of another culture. As someone who has lived in the U.S. and France (as well as the U.K. of course!) I guarantee you'll enjoy it more if you immerse yourself in the local culture rather than being an 'American abroad'.

As for racing/riding, if you go across to Belgium and/or Holland you'll find most everyone speaks English pretty well. Lot's of Brit's travel across to Dunkerque every weekend too!
Your sand riding should be excellent by the time you return to the States!

Thanks for the information so far everybody, every little bit helps!

On a side note, I am starting my French lessons tonight after work so I look forward to the day that I can walk into the local dealer and actually talk to them and not just browse around the store.

I am headed to the Bercy SX here in a couple weeks as well, is anybody else on here going?

Thanks again,

Bill

Bercy should be fun for you. If you find a pit pass you'll be able to hang out with the US contingent (Brayton, Canard and Barcia this year).
If you can't get to the pits they all hang out at the lobby/bar at the hotel next to the stadium.
You can find a lot of industry people there. If DC makes the trip I'm sure he'll take you under his wing and show you around.
North of france is going to be a bit brutal especially in the winter... Keep us updated.
