Did my first brake taps yesterday, does anyone know if it’s vital to pull in the clutch? I did it without clutch and bike didn’t stall and I had no problems.

I also realised it doesn’t drop the front that much so if your not in the right body position it isn’t going to save you. Looks cool though!

Pull the clutch if you don't want to take a soil sample

If you do stall in midair, make sure to pull the clutch in before you land.

next the “seat bounce” .... just remember taping the brake is a technique to be used to correct a mistake, generally speaking. make sure you have proper jumping technique sorted as well and are comfortable in the air before worrying about brake taps or seat bumps for that matter!

You only have to kill the engine once to remind you to keep the clutch pulled in.

I’ll try that too, like to get new skills dialled before I do it during a race.

Have to be honest so far it seems like a fairly non essential skill ( unless I’m not pushing down hard enough)

It’s essential. A few degrees can make the difference between crashing and saving it. Plus if your not pulling in the clutch and not stalling it you’re not doing it right. The back wheel stopping is what makes the biggest adjustment.

Use the clutch and practice the technique of brake tapping to be good at it in a pinch. But don’t rely on it. Rely on good body position to put the bike where you want it.

F@“! there’s some muppets in here. Agreeing to the advice and willing to put it into practice gets downvoted. How do you even get to there

#Rekluse

Best to have proper body position and just push the front end down, but when tired we get sloppy and lazy with technique.

Sheesh.. I did 10,000 jumps where I did nothing but pull in the clutch and rev a little before I ever _touched_ the brake. The idea of landing a 4S with a stalled engine, on a jump big enough to have time to brake tap and THEN get the revs back up for the landing, scares me.

Tapping the brake is cool how it works. I usually only need to do it if I’m coming out of a corner and seat bouncing up over a jump.

All kinds of theories on it. Just tapping to tap you lose momentum. So, I only tap right out of corners when I’m compressing to Get extra hop where the front wheel will
Be higher than I want it to be and body position getting over the front won’t be enough to get her back down.

Its mainly some of our local SX (amateur level) tracks that have jumps that pop you high enough to give you time to brake tap - yet they aren't death defying jumps. They aren't high speed, they're either high RPM 2nd gear or medium RPM 3rd gear jumps - you just get some good pop out of them. In MX, its not that often a brake tap should be needed (it can be, just more rare). Vast majority of the time in MX, body position allows for bike adjustment. Some jumps out of tight corners come to mind.

I've stalled it in the air before, several times actually. You land and the bike just roll starts, nothing scary has happened to me so far anyway. While trail riding, some lips will throw you different than expected, I'm faster on the brake than the clutch apparently.

2 strokes no. 4 strokes yes, you need to pull clutch unless you tap very very softly. 4 stroke with rexluse about clutch, no clutch pull needed.

this is not true.

I watched jeff ward in 1984 tap his brake over the big triple every lap (pontiac silverdome). all weekend long. Smile some use it as technique. just fyi.

Wrong section, take it to the "I don't know what the fuck I'm doing" section. In the mean time learn the brake check technique, a must learn if you want to win.

yeah, understood there are situations to use it ... i did say generally speaking. If there is a situation you really have to use a shit ton of throttle on a short run up to clear the obstacle (seat bouncing out of a corner) you probably will have to use it regularly. I was at the track this morning and had to use it on one obstacle on almost every lap as well... I usually try to use body english to correct my bike attitude when in the air but this situation it wasn’t working. I was actually thinking about this post when I was back at the truck trying to recover... it was 106 at the track by 10am so i was sucking pretty bad!
