BIKES OF TODAY v YESTERDAY

Edited Date/Time 1/21/2013 10:04pm
I saw the pics of KW's yz from 1996, and I was surprised at how plain the bikes used to be compared to today's two-wheeled billboards like Braytons jgr yammie. What do you guys think? Are teams fighting for every advertising dollar available? Or with exposure comes sponsors? Or is this just a style like leg warders and slap bracelets?

Might be just Factory Yamaha (as opposed to a satellite/factory support team like JGR) - Reed's 2005 YZ250 looks just as plain.

Actually maybe it's just factory bikes altogether - they generally have less need of outside sponsorship.

Would love to know the dollar value of a full factory bike these days,i would imagine it would not be cheap. They certainly look super sick these days, even with all of the graphics,logos,etc...

I think the sport has had to evolve that way. Outside sponsors are what drive teams nowadays and they demand professionalism and maximum exposure. Also check the attention to detail on braytons compared to windhams. Little things like wear on the clutch cover and frame is visible on the old bike, ud never see a scratch on a full fledged factory bike nowadays. Just more evidence of evolution I guess

You are comparing factory Yamaha to a satellite team. During Yamaha`s last year with a factory rig - 2007 the bikes we`re still plain, or maybe clean would be a better word. Either way - the 07 factory YZF`s were some of the best looking bikes of all time IMO.

The Hondas are still pretty clean looking comparedto the other factory teams. I think the increased expenses from 4 strokes means the teams will have to get outside $$$

Being able to jump the length of the stadium in two hops is a fair difference...

That Team Surf bike use to blow my mind when I was a kid for some reason. Who was the one add for? "Jeff Glass says hi to a buddy." He's jumping over a guy. Always thought that was a pretty cool deal.

Blame it on the 4 stroke, bra. Every problem in the world today is because of the 4 stroke. True story

Back when a factory team meant a factory team. No mistaking these guys or their bikes for anything else.

Right? Could you imagine what a Surf bike would look like today with that colorway? Red/Orange with yellow, blue, and green? Talk about an opportunity for something cool. Not to mention the sublimated gear now. They could really get good looking with that team.

I was told by a factory mechanic that because 4-strokes are faster and more powerful, they can now handle the extra weight caused by additional stickers.
