DaveJ Added a reply to Problems with front forks and finger pain (rmz-250)
1/11/2019 6:04pm Okay...don't have one of the forks on hand but I found a cutaway type drawing from SHOWA. This shows a top out spring in the left and right fork. Keep in mind that these top out springs are small and seldom, if ever, come out during regular service and tuning. You usually have to remove a seal head assembly to...

DaveJ Added a reply to Problems with front forks and finger pain (rmz-250)
1/11/2019 5:46pm There would absolutely have to be a top out spring. Fork would be crazy noisy going to full extension without one. Let me see what I can find.

1/11/2019 5:30pm The fiche shows the 13 250 with a parallel design and the 13 450 with a SFF. Then both with the SFF in 14. Fiche is wrong, and therefore, so am I. So with the mention of a spring not being right and forks at two different lengths, I jumped to a conclusion that the springs were not the same...

1/11/2019 4:30pm On a 13 250? I'm almost positive it's a parallel design. I deserve a whipping if I'm wrong. And I thought I read that the guy working on them reported that each fork leg had a different spring. Could not tell if that was a length or rate issue.

1/11/2019 2:40pm I'm a little concerned that he seems to be giving you information with some level of uncertainly verses giving you facts. He should know the spring rate, the spring length and any added parts. This is a very traditional SHOWA close cartridge fork. It has a spring bearing at the bottom, but none of that can really be seen or...

1/11/2019 2:41pm Actually, it does. A longer (more pre-load) or higher rate spring in one fork, if the difference is great enough, puts added force against the top out spring, which would make that fork longer than the other one. I don't mean to imply that the different lengths could only happen from different springs. There are many things that could cause...
DaveJ Added a reply to replacing fork seals
1/10/2019 5:49pm Well...I'm not going to say "worn" but I will say they have been used.
DaveJ Added a reply to replacing fork seals
1/9/2019 3:25pm The indication of "wear" or abuse that a bushing has gone through is based on how much of the coating has been polished off on the metal side, and then, more importantly, how much wear there is on the coated (black) side. A bushing is actually still in good shape as long as you can't see through the black coating...

1/9/2019 10:23am First of all, the fork assemblies should be the same length. The only time I see them being different, and acceptable, are the SFF-Air forks, where one fork is charged and the other is not, making the air side longer, (crappy design). For your forks they should be the same. Now...if someone put a stiffer or longer spring in one...

1/9/2019 10:13am Can't tell you how many of these I have done. The very first one was my own 01 YZ. So...here's what you need to know. 1. Nearly all shocks in the YZ 46mm group are a drop-in swap. The only exception would be the later model shocks where the N2 reservoir is not parallel with the shock body. That said...

1/9/2019 9:37am I was thinking same thing....shift drum or gear fork. I just got lucky by pulling the right clutch case hoping that I could sneak a peak into the tranny as to pre-order parts...and there was the loose bolt. I was able to spin it with my fingers. Sneaked a wrench in and tightened it then everything worked perfectly...then tore it...

1/8/2019 1:02pm It sounds like it is exactly the same problem. The bike would not shift beyond 2nd. Pulled the cover off and that bolt was very loose. Pulled off the clutch basket and the water pump drive gear. Tightened the bolt. Put the rest of it back together. Bike shifts perfectly now. I put a chemical lock on the bolt just...

8/31/2018 3:24pm One more thing... I'm really surprised that there wasn't a class action law suit against California. Not sure how they can legally collect registration fees on a vehicle and then tell you that you can't ride it. By comparison, when you have a track-only car, you don't pay registration on it. Even when used in a government owner park. Seems...

8/31/2018 3:20pm Best thing to do it just purchase your bike from out of state. No taxes, no registration. Make it a full time closed course bike. The states loses on the revenue, we get more money for tires, and we get more riders supporting local tracks. If you need a "green sticker" bike just get one of the new plated bikes.

8/31/2018 9:43am And let's not forget that it was the red sticker program that ironically brought about so many open-to-the public private operated MX tracks.

8/31/2018 9:41am In all seriousness, some of the biggest gross polluters are gas powered construction equipment and two stroke lawn and garden equipment, closely followed by old cars.

2/15/2018 9:07am Let's say it like it is. Both bladders and free pistons work. The only catch is when you don't properly position the free piston during assembly. Converting a free piston to a bladder is a waste of money. AND.... Most modern suspensions have really good "bones" (tubes, valves, etc) but nearly all of them are either set-up poorly and/or can...
